shanegt Posted March 8, 2021 Report Posted March 8, 2021 Good morning My budget is under £1000. I am looking for a Nihonto, hopefully with signed but I know I’m pushing my budget here? Bare blades are welcome as this is how it will be cared for and displayed. West midlands based.
16k Posted March 8, 2021 Report Posted March 8, 2021 Shane, unless you’re looking into smaller blades, you won’t find many quality blades at that price. You’re more likely to get a Showato or something like that I’m afraid...
shanegt Posted March 8, 2021 Author Report Posted March 8, 2021 Thanks 16k! I have seen some shin gunto that although in poor mounts, have an early blade with sign. Thats the sort of level I’m anticipating. How much extra would get me something that is worth collecting? I know this question has a million vagaries.
Bugyotsuji Posted March 8, 2021 Report Posted March 8, 2021 The word Nihonto includes long, medium and short. You might be able to find an acceptable Tanto with Koshirae for that price, or do you specifically want a long blade?
PNSSHOGUN Posted March 8, 2021 Report Posted March 8, 2021 2000GBP will get you a nice Katana, old or Gendai in Samurai/Gunto mounts. Keep an eye on the sales section, lots to choose from in that range. My advice is look at as many swords as you can in that price range while saving up, decide what you like then go for it.
raaay Posted March 8, 2021 Report Posted March 8, 2021 Hi Shane i would try Liverpool militaria, web site , normally lots there in your price range , or hold off until the arms fairs start again ?
shanegt Posted March 8, 2021 Author Report Posted March 8, 2021 All really good advice. Thanks all. Does the NMB ever have a meet up between pandemics?
Gakusee Posted March 8, 2021 Report Posted March 8, 2021 Ian Chapman (https://nihonto.org.uk/Consignment.html) has some tanto in that price bracket bracket. Bonham’s and Olympia Auctions (Thomas Del Mar) should have UK auctions coming up in the next few months. Various other UK based dealers can assist you with that itch - Eddie (http://www.japanesegallery.co.uk/default.php) could have something but likely more expensive than your budget.... I am not involved commercially with any of them but know some of them via our community and club (see below). In general, I recommend joining out society (https://to-ken.uk) and meeting some fellow collectors. Someone might sell you something, but more importantly - you could get involved with the community, learn faster etc. Hopefully in-person meetings will re-start after July, when we should all have been inoculated, per our government. Good luck!
