Hi Todd, That's the listing from my index, if this is the one you're looking for. TS is Zuikan Tomei Soran by Iida.

I recommend to use our search mode with "Hosokawa Masachika" and author "Henry Wilson".There had been 2 more entries by Henry Wilson from August/September 2004,which have probably been lost: "...He is listed in Hawleys under MAS 59.He also used a different kanji for chika during his career so it is very possible that he is also listed under MAS 49,too...".There may have been replies to these queries which I don't have.Ludolf

Good catch Ludolf!

The pages are here...and some excellent info from Henry!

The board is becoming a small Nihonto reference book in its own right :D

Nothing much has been lost on the forum..when we moved to this one, I carried over 99% of the old posts, although dates might have updated.

Ludolf,

This forum (under my name) only started early Aug 2006, so any posts before that must have been on Rich's old forum I'm afraid. I guess that means we are just over 2 years old now :)

Hi Todd,

I once owned a wakizashi by Hosokawa Masachika with NTHK papers. Yes, he was a student of Hosokawa Masayoshi (who in turn was a student of Suishinshi Masahide). I can probably dig up some pics of the sword if you're interested for comparison.

I also have a great book about Masahide and his school (in Japanese I'm afraid). If you need mei comparisons, then just let me know.

Unfortunately, I don't have much. One photo, two scans and some images of the NTHK certificate (all poor quality). The certificate says:

Front:

Kanteisho

Den Hosokawa Masachika

Shoshin - Nagasa Isshaku Issub Kore ga ari ( The length is 1 Shaku, 1 Sun )

Date - Hansei Junu-Nen Ni-gatsu Juni-hi 11/02/2007

Nihon Token Hozon Kai (In Seal)

Back:

Dai: Ichi Roku Ni San Goju Go

Meibun: (signature) Mumei

Kitae: Itame

Hamon: Gunome Midare

Boshi: Midare Komu Hakeru

Nakago: Mekugi ana: Is Yasurime: Kattesagari

Biko: Musashi Kuni, Keio ?

Probably not much help, but you might find something in there.

As someone mentioned above, Henry Wilson has done a good write up about the history of this smith and included a nice oshigata of a Masachika tanto he owns/owned.

It would be great to see some photos of your blade if you have them (I'm a bit of a fan of this school). I have a naginata by Suishinshi Masatsugu (Masahide's grandson) and a wakizashi by Ryusaishi Masashige (a pupil of Masahide).

Thank you Justin. Interesting that the "chika" kanji on your origami is different from the "chika" kanji on the NTHK paper with this blade (mumei).

Apparently he (MasaChika) did use both kanji at different times. The blade is currently out of polish with little to no activity apparent. Perhaps by the time I have it polished I will be able to take and submit photos (afraid I'm a bit of a computer moron. Old school, resitant to change and all).
