Krystian Posted May 5, 2020 Report Posted May 5, 2020 Hello, Katana signed "Fujiwara Sadamichi" for sale. I am not used to selling swords so please do not hesitate to ask If you need any addition information, dimensions or photos. Most probably made in 18th or 19th century. Blade in good polish with just few minor rust spots. Very interesting hamon line and a lot of activities in the hamon. Only bigger problem I could notice are what appears to be cracks on mune. Size: Shirasaya: 93 cm Nagasa: 64 cm Moto-haba: 31 mm, Saki-haba: 18 mm, Kasane: 7 mm Sori: 8 mm Price: 2000 Euro More photos here: https://soryu.pl/collections/other-items/products/katana-signed-fujiwara-sadamichi Regards, Krystian 1 Quote
Krystian Posted May 5, 2020 Author Report Posted May 5, 2020 There are some questions about the nakago. One place looks particulary strange. Here are some more photos. I know that comments in the sale section so prohibited so If you have any thoughts please write me a pm. 1 Quote
Marius Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 Krystian, it is perfectly OK to make comments a sales thread if the OP invites people to submit them. Of course you can choose to get comments via PM. Quote
Krystian Posted May 6, 2020 Author Report Posted May 6, 2020 I did not know that. Thank you Marius. So If anyone wants to comment please do so here. Quote
vajo Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 Hard to say. As longer i look on the pictures my eyes see a welding line, which fits with the crude yasurime and rust in that aera. But on the other hand it could be nothing. Thats why pictures are hard to judge a blade. It could come from a rusted tsuba. Overall the blade looks nice and has a interesting hamon and shape. A nice polished and signed Katana for a reasonable price. It could be worth to have it in hands for a european collector which pays no custom fees and tax. I hope for another opinion from the trained eyes in the community. Quote
Krystian Posted May 6, 2020 Author Report Posted May 6, 2020 I have never seen welded nakago so I am not sure what to look for. But I believe it should be rather straight thin line. I examined nakago in bright light and could not find any trace of it. Unless it is a thick 1 cm line with a different color but even so It does not make a distinctive line on both sides. I showed a blade to a collector in Poland with much more experience than me and he also does not see signs of welding. 1 Quote
Krystian Posted May 6, 2020 Author Report Posted May 6, 2020 But at this point I do not think that this blade could sell. Se Admin we can move it to nihonto section for discussion. 1 Quote
16k Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 I have never seen one either, so it could indeed be the case. That said, it seems to be obvious on one side and not the other, so I’m leaning towards a nakago that was mangled by too tight or damaged Habaki. Then if it’s not soldered, it is a nice blade, with a nice hamon. If I had the money, I might have been tempted, but perhaps, with the doubts, you won’t get the price you want Krystian. 1 Quote
Brian Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 I think there is little to no chance of this being a welded nakago. Would be reserved for the high end blades anyways. No, just a nice example of a katana at a fair price. 3 Quote
vajo Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 Which Sadamichi is that? I found some at Markus Compendium but i have no pictures to compare. Quote
Jacques Posted May 6, 2020 Report Posted May 6, 2020 Nakago jiri looks like Mishina school, maybe this smith was a student of a Mishina swordsmith.. Example here Quote
vajo Posted May 7, 2020 Report Posted May 7, 2020 I found the auction of the sword. The nakago looks good on that. 防州住藤原貞道 八月日」在銘の見事な一振り! 刀 63.8cm 造りの良い オークフリー 防州住藤原貞道 八月日」在銘の見事な一振り! 刀 63.8cm 造りの良い ... 1 Quote
Open_market Posted May 7, 2020 Report Posted May 7, 2020 Interesting sword. Does it include a Habaki? Are the photos in the last post dated? The nakago looks less rusted in the previous post than the photos from seller. Quote

No, just a nice example of a katana at a fair price. I agree with Brian. The welded Nakago I've seen have always been high end smiths and totally noticeable. It looks like old wear and tare. Nothing out of normal for an old blade I would imagine 1 Quote
