ChuckJ Posted March 19, 2020 Report Posted March 19, 2020 Hello Gents, I rescued a Tanto, which was in terrible mounts ( cheap chinese tsuka) which previous owners did very bad things to the blade. Anyway, it's at a new home where it will be respected and I will send it to have a Shirasaya made. I appreciate your help and the friendships I have made here! I have no information about this blade including the Mei or possible Jidai, I'm hoping you can help me with this Tanto. Thank you, Chuck P.S. I took pictures of the blade from BOTH sides for Hawaii Ken! : ) Quote
ROKUJURO Posted March 20, 2020 Report Posted March 20, 2020 Chuck, congratulations to your new blade! It is a WAKIZASHI, not a TANTO, as it is longer than 30,3 cm. A SHIRASAYA (not Shirosaya) should be made after a professional polish. You can compare the signature: http://www.nihontocraft.com/Musashi_Morimichi_Katana.html 1 Quote

Ken-Hawaii Posted March 20, 2020 Report Posted March 20, 2020 Something to keep your mind off illnesses. Good photos, Chuck. You'll need a new habaki, as well as shirasaya, by the way. 1 Quote
ChuckJ Posted March 20, 2020 Author Report Posted March 20, 2020 Something to keep your mind off illnesses. Good photos, Chuck. You'll need a new habaki, as well as shirasaya, by the way. Hi Ken, I had to gently cut the cheap chinese brass $5.00 habaki off the blade (which was hammered on for a fit) using a hobby hack saw and dremel tool, It was nerve racking to say the least. The blade/nakago was already injured by someone hammering on the habaki and $15 Chinese tsuka (makes me sick) the mekugi was a broken off chopstick. I am fully aware of a new habaki with the Shirasaya, it's going to Randy Black to put back right. Some, may think I'm stupid for saving the blade by having a habaki and shirasaya made but I have respect for the blade. It saddens me as to what some others have done do it, but now it can be respected and studied. Best wishes to all, Chuck Quote
ChrisW Posted March 20, 2020 Report Posted March 20, 2020 I think you made a good choice in saving it. Sure it may not be financially profitable, but you're more about saving a piece of history. I would have let Randy remove the habaki if it were stuck on. But I don't see any damage from your removal, so it is all good! Shame there is damage from someone putting it on there in the first place. Most people start with a wakizashi as their first because they are so plentiful and relatively inexpensive. Congrats on starting your adventure! Keep your eyes peeled here, you'll learn a lot and have a chance to purchase more if you wish. Quote
ChuckJ Posted March 20, 2020 Author Report Posted March 20, 2020 Good save! Thank you, Stephen. Quote
