I have recently acquired this sword and would like to know if it looks ok and is original. The numbers match the blade and scabbard

It might even be a Polish replica. Steve was showing some Polish examples a while back that were quite good!.

 

As you suspected, the stamps are an attempt, but not right. The serial number is way too high also.

The same lacs details too, and it seems the in a place of the tsuka, the paint is pealing and revealing a brass material, so unfortunately, fake.

Well the good thing I can tell ya is to learn from here and move forward. What were your suspicions, what were making you think it was a fake? Dis you go against your gut?

This one is Chinese, not one of the Polish repro. I don't think the details are improved overall, while the polish swords are almost entirely correct,all Iijima marked from memory and have much better stamps and fonts. The bohi here is classic Chinese, as is the incorrect placement of the saya ring. I'll copy into the fake thread, as an example of a fake Gifu, if I can't find a similar one there.

Is the fuchi copper or brass? That was my first red flag. Could fool some folks.

 

Just out of curiosity, Were any of these fakes known to be hardened?
