Vermithrax16 Posted August 20, 2017 Report Posted August 20, 2017 A Naotane waki up for auction. The hada pattern work is simply mind blowing. I don't really keep track of waki so no comment on price, but this is well worth a look and a picture save for admiration: http://www.sword-auction.jp/en/content/as16144-%E8%84%87%E5%B7%AE%EF%BC%9A%E5%BD%AB%E4%B8%89%E6%97%A5%E6%9C%88-%E5%A4%A7%E6%85%B6%E7%9B%B4%E8%83%A4-%E8%8A%B1%E6%8A%BC%E4%B9%B3%E5%89%B2%E5%9C%9F%E5%A3%87%E6%8B%82%E5%90%89%E7%94%B0%E6%96%87%E5%B9%B3-%E6%96%87%E5%8C%96%E4%BA%94%E5%B9%B4%E4%B8%AD%E7%A7%8B%E4%B8%8A%E6%97%AC-wakizashi-hori-mikaduki-taikei-naotane-kao 1 Quote

BIG Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 Anybody know the utsushi came from with this masame hada? Best Regards Quote
Shugyosha Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 I would guess Yamato Hosho school which is famous for its masame hada. I think he's gone a stage further and mixed two kinds of steel as the layers really jump out on this one. A lovely sword. 2 Quote
Surfson Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 Ray, what do you make of the sword having already been sold once? I noticed that too. The charitable view is that the buyer didn't pay, but they usually put a blade on hold, waiting for payment I assume. The less charitable view is that the buyer received it and sent it back. I don't know Tsuruta San's policies and routines. Quote
Surfson Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 That sword made me wonder about another thing. What is the effect of a blade being custom made on value and collector sentiment? Do you like them better if they have the name of the guy that ordered them on it or do you prefer that they not have that? I am torn about it. I can imagine in some cases that the maker pushes out of their usual comfort zone to make something unusual, but in the few cases that I have had custom ordered blades, I have not been able to find out anything about the owner that it was made for, so it's just some guy's name on the blade, and not somebody that is notable or a name that adds meaningfully to the provenance. Of course, if the name on the blade is the emperor...... 1 Quote
Ray Singer Posted August 21, 2017 Report Posted August 21, 2017 It is difficult to say, and I should say that there is also a possibility that the sword was withdrawn from sale for some reason. Perhaps somebody here remembers if the sword was flagged as sold. 1 Quote
