LakeBum Posted November 16, 2015 Report Posted November 16, 2015 Starting off, I'm not going to buy this. Not even looking to buy, just looking to learn lol. This seller said he did not remove the peg to check the tang because it was lacquered over. Granted he doesn't think it is a traditional blade, but would you guys pop the peg out and look or just leave it? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Samurai-Sword-Tanto-with-Bag-WW2-Navy-Officer-Bringback-Minty-No-Res-/391320214219?hash=item5b1c809acb:g:wvsAAOSwsFpWRovj Quote
Stephen Posted November 16, 2015 Report Posted November 16, 2015 (edited) leave it. Know the seller, hes one of the good guys. edit to add his web site http://soldiersmuseum.com/shop/ Edited November 16, 2015 by Stephen Quote
LakeBum Posted November 16, 2015 Author Report Posted November 16, 2015 Oh yah I am not doubting the sellers integrity, I just wanted to know if you guys would be like me and "want to peak under the hood" so to speak. If it is not traditional then it would probably hurt the value to break the lacquer, so I get what the seller is saying. Just wondering why the maker would lacquer over the peg to where it could not be removed. Quote
SAS Posted November 16, 2015 Report Posted November 16, 2015 Only thing that comes to mind is that there is nothing to see on the tang if it is not a traditional blade, so lacquering over the peg was done by the shirasaya maker. Quote
Brian Posted November 16, 2015 Report Posted November 16, 2015 It doesn't look like your usual "tourist" style piece. The shape is far better than most. But then, the hamon does not appear to be real either. So the maker is either trying to make us think it is hiding a better blade when it isn't, or this is something more deceptive. I am sure the seller knows what he has, and has tried to make sure there is no confusion when the buyer finds nothing of value in there. Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 16, 2015 Report Posted November 16, 2015 The bag is worth the $18. Hamon pretty diffuse. I would love to buy the USN buttons. John Quote

Baka Gaijin Posted November 17, 2015 Report Posted November 17, 2015 Morning Chaps., I reckon a lot can be learned about this by the quality and dimensions of the en suite Habaki. I'm not sure about the "lacquer", it does not look right for what I guess would have been a clear coating such as Benigara. It looks a tad recent, but it may be the quality of the images. Quote
LakeBum Posted November 17, 2015 Author Report Posted November 17, 2015 Thanks for your input guys! Does look like a really good site too Stephen, thanks for the link! Quote
