Mrgreen Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 Hi all, Like many, my first post is a help post. I collect WWII items and this is my first Japanese WWII sword of which many I hope to acquire. Would someone mind helping me ID this sword? I have looked through the Kangi database and cannot find a match for the marking on this blade handle. Pardon me if I don't reference the traditional name of the sword components. I am just beginning to learn. Total blade length is 33 and 1/2 inches Blade length from front of Habaki 24 1/2 inches Thank you in advance! I can get more pics if needed. Quote
cisco-san Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 At the moment I have no access to my books and the pic from the mei on my smart phone is very small (I have to buy a bigger one :-) ) but it could be Tsunekiyo (TSUNEKIYO 常清) Quote
Mrgreen Posted September 4, 2015 Author Report Posted September 4, 2015 I looked up Tsunekiyo in a few databases after you mentioned this. It also matches the Kangi you posted. How significant are Tsunekiyo swords? Quote
Mark Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 could it be Tsunehiro? I do not think it matters much, the sword does not appear traditionally made, it is a military "gunto" sword. A genuine example of a WWII sword but not something handmade by a well known, trained, swordsmith. Quote
Mrgreen Posted September 4, 2015 Author Report Posted September 4, 2015 I have a gut check about to happen. I paid $650 for this thing. I hope I didn't pay to much. IT was one of those, take it right now or never have a chance again type of deals. Quote
Stephen Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 can you take back? sorry....650 would have been tops for that Quote
Stephen Posted September 4, 2015 Report Posted September 4, 2015 some clever editing? what happend to that large amount??? 5Ksomething Quote
Mrgreen Posted September 4, 2015 Author Report Posted September 4, 2015 Was a typo. Nothing clever just fat fingers. Knowing that it is tops still does not make me happy. That is what I get for not doing my research before purchasing and if I don't get the time for it, don't buy it. Quote
reeder Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 It happens to all of us. I recently bought a bunch of stuff I'm going to lose money on if I resell. It's part of the game. You win some, you lose some. Hopefully the wins outweigh the losses and ties. If it has a handle I think you'll easily get your money back. If not, going to have to sell for parts, or buy a handle to complete it. Either way, I don't think you'll lose money, if so, not much. Just don't be in a rush to dump it. Quote
Brian Posted September 5, 2015 Report Posted September 5, 2015 As Brandon said, if it is complete, you'll get $650 or $700 back from it as a military sword. Just get that tip oiled fast. Odd signature, in that it isn't cut as per normal. Almost looks amateurish or stamped. So treat it as unsigned, arsenal blade. You won't lose a lot if anything, move it on and take your time on the next one. Quote
SteveM Posted September 20, 2015 Report Posted September 20, 2015 could it be Tsunehiro? Yes, Tsunehiro with an old style "hiro" 常廣 Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted September 20, 2015 Report Posted September 20, 2015 Why would You buy a sword without handle? And that big rust spot at the tip! Is just way off. Quote
cisco-san Posted September 21, 2015 Report Posted September 21, 2015 Yes, Tsunehiro with an old style "hiro" 常廣 thx!!! Quote
Johnny Barracuda Posted September 23, 2015 Report Posted September 23, 2015 Why would You buy a sword without handle? And that big rust spot at the tip! Is just way off. I concur. Such an amount of rust on a showato mean that polishing it away would cost more that the whole value of the sword! Quote
