Don't always like to discuss ongoing auctions, but thought this one might prove educational.

Like to hear from Gilles and Piers on this one.

That really doesn't "gel" with me. Is it just badly ground and "restored" or is there way more wrong with this. Entire hamon ground on, or is there an underlying one? The tube looks thin and unconvincing. The laquer/patina is about the only thing that looks ok to me.

Brian,

I have the feeling that the hamon is fake. The base of the blade (kerakubi) has a strange shape and I think that I see like a faint line in the sixth pictures (from top to bottom) running all around that base at a few millimeters higher than the tube itself (which can be a sign of a weld). To make sure, you have to take a look into the tube to see how the blade is attached to the tube. Those yari are usually made of one piece. Fakes are not rare and just a glance here can save you the day and your money also.

Hope it helps :D

Gilles,

No worries, there is absolutely no chance of me buying this one. I am fairly certain it is not all it claims to be. Just posting it to see if I am right :)

In my experience, that tube (which is forged in one with the blade) is usually thicker and looks forged.

Brian,

the thin-walled tube is perhaps not a big problem, but it should be conical, if I know it right. This one looks like recently home-made from a water-pipe. Maybe just a decoration piece for theater or western tourists.

Presuambly it seems, plus that this crab of an seller equally filed(by Flex???) an Hisaki area(?) onto?(bricksteel)-letting blank something we would call Hiraji in other circumstances?

:rotfl:

he´d better done in offering that as an toothpick or letteropener...(No?)

Late to the party, I know. The dealer seems to be doing his best to describe this thing without dissemble, but some of the people here have eagle eyes and can probably advance the game.

The blade itself, small at 4", may be genuine, but with a poor polish. I am surprised the kerakubi is so clean. The tube, yes, I agree seems to be less tapered and more pipe-like. No indication of the diameter of opening in fukuro. Overall the thing seems a little on the small side. Not a typical Chinese knock-off, I feel, but more of a Japanese bodge, perhaps. Dunno? :dunno:

All, I recently had a major purchase from this seller and had nothing but the most courteous service from him. Not only was the item exactly as described and photographed, he went out of his way to give me a better price than I had initially offered, and he also sent regular emails informing me of the progress he was making in obtaining all the required export documents. I'm sure that in the case of this yari he does not know exactly what he is selling. If my memory serves, his shop tends to be mainly ceramics and the like.

Dear Ian,

I fully agree with you. I already dealt with this seller and his honesty is beyond doubts. Like you said, in that case, he does not know what he is selling.

Nothing wrong with the seller, but we need to be able to point out items with a problem, sometimes the seller doesn't know themselves. But we owe it to the community to show them what to look out for in items that have problems or may be modern.

Seller has a good reputation, as a search here will show.

Adrian, thanks for the link. Not really looking for any new yari, but like Gilles and Chris F. (viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13625) I have a thing for fukuro yari :)

Really want a fukuro naginata oneday.
