Daniel Posted November 4, 2012 Report Posted November 4, 2012 Hi all, I have finally found my field of collecting and that is ww2 Gendaito. I have recently bought two Gendaito of members of this board a Masamitsu of Joe(Swordguyjoe) and the Kiyokatsu of Josh Reid wich recently started the star stamp debate. I am happy with both and think they are worthy my newly started Gendai collection. As the previous thread come to focus about the star stamp I thought I would post a few photos of the sword that started it. Opinions are most welcome if you feel it´s crap by all means say so, but please focus on the sword not the stamp that discussion are already settled as far as I´m concerned. Thanks in advance Kind Regards Daniel Quote
Daniel Posted November 4, 2012 Author Report Posted November 4, 2012 last All photos by Josh Reid and ebay seller candelaria2007 thanks to both of you Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 The kiyokatsu was mine too! Great sword. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 I was really bummed to see it go. Quote
george trotter Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 Looks like a nice example to start your gendaito collection with. What is the date? I have seen a number of RJT blades from Niigata and they also have the nagashi lines on the polish...nice touch. Have you started to research him yet? Regards, Quote
Daniel Posted November 5, 2012 Author Report Posted November 5, 2012 Thank you for your comments. Joe, funny how I seem to pick up your leftovers :-) George, it is dated One day in March 1943. I've tried to find some info of the smith but it doesn't appear to be much info of him. I read in a previous thread were Chris Bowen suggested he was a student of Sadakiyo. That's about all I know. Maybe I pick up the odd ones. Thanks again for your replies, I really appreciate it. Best Regards Daniel Quote
george trotter Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 I read in a previous thread were Chris Bowen suggested he was a student of Sadakiyo. That's about all I know. Daniel Hope you don't mind but I looked up a Japanese publication called "Nihon Gendaito Shoshi" (Short History of Japanese Gendaito) by UCHIYAMA Takashi (in Token Bijutsu April 1969 # 147) Chapter II p.9. The Niigata line goes ... Amata (Amada) Sadayoshi followed by a son Amata Akitsugu who trained together with another student Uemura Sadakiyo. This Sadakiyo had a son Uemura Sadayoshi who trained together with another student Sato Kiyokatsu (your guy - who may have also used the name Sadaaki?)...so, Kiyokatsu was a student of Sadakiyo as Chris said. You are right, there does not seem to be a lot of info on the students although as you say he was 2nd seat in 1941...so pretty good. Regards, Quote
k morita Posted November 5, 2012 Report Posted November 5, 2012 Hi,Daniel san, According to a [Nihon-to Meikan], Kiyokatsu's real name is Sato(family name) Masaru, working in Yuzawa city,Niigata prefecture during war period. When your sword was made, he was 29 years old. Quote
Daniel Posted November 5, 2012 Author Report Posted November 5, 2012 Amazing, Thank you very much. I really enjoy the blade myself. Best Daniel Quote
Daniel Posted April 1, 2014 Author Report Posted April 1, 2014 Hi After much thought I decided to send this sword for a polish. Even when I first saw the sword I thought it had potential and would look spectacular in a good fresh polish. When I read about Kunitaro san's services I decided to try his services. Today I handed the sword over to my local post office and it is now on it's way to Japan. We'll see when it returns to me if I made a good decision or not. I think it will be extremely interesting to see this star stamped Gendaito in polish that "started" the long thread about star stamps sometime ago. I also hope to learn a lot during this little adventure. If anyone is interested in seeing some pictures of the blade when it's finished I would be more than happy to post them when the sword returns. Best Regards Daniel Quote
