Yes Stephen, could not agree more. I have had some discussions with others about it and there was mentioning of a reworked nakago and fire damage, but I cannot be sure until someone has actually seen it with their own eyes and in-hand since photos cannot reveal what the human eye can see, or it has been polished. Shinsa would be useless at this stage, and not only because of the Gimei signature.

Totally forgot the measurements of the sword : Length entire blade from end of nakago to tip : 84cm Nagasa length : 63 cm, Width ha machi to mune : 3.4cm at nakago Zori : 1.7-2 cm Length including tsuka and Saya 1 mtr. I got this sword around 2006, bought it from a guy collecting WWII things, mainly allied. He was a re-enactor and I do not think he fully appreciated it. KM

Since I finally have a very good camera (Zeiss lens) (on my phone NB!) I was able to take some proper HD images of my Japanese Sword yesterday. Yes. It needs a polish one day by hopefully a master Togishi. Yes it is pitted. But it can, and one day will be restored. Yes. I know I need a replacement Tsuka. Yes it should get a Shirasaya. Yes. I know the Guntō type 94/98 wood-lined Aluminium Saya looks decrepid, but that is how it came to me. part of the history of the sword sadly. The sword has a slight warp in it but it should be possible for an experienced Togishi to straighten it. No fatal flaws afaik. ( [Kindai] Gimei) Minamoto Masayuki. There were other Masayuki's though in Japan's sword making history according to the " Index of Japanese swordsmiths" (volume 1, A-M), compiled by my friend Markus Sesko. Signed katana Mei, no Ura Mei present. Habaki: silver foil Silvered fuchi knob. Tsuba and Seppa all numbered the same. General shape Shinogi-Zukuri Kissaki is a mix between Chu-Kissaki and O-kissaki (as far as I can tell) Zori seems Chūzori. Looks like a mix between mid-Edo and late-Edo (Shinto and Shinshinto) No mitsu line present. Munemachi is crisp. Hamachi is crisp. Shinogi and ko-shinogi could be more crisp. A polisher will do that. Ubu Nakagojiri. Nakagojiri shape points to Shinshinto Nakagojiri shape is Ha Agari Kurijiri Yasurime are hard to make out. Nakago Ana is not drilled nut punched.. Ubu Ha. I see tight hada. I see some Kinsuji. I see Ashi. I see a Choji-Midare Hamon Maybe some Tobi-Yake somewhere. I see Nioi and Nie. I see a Boshi on the Kissaki. I see swordfight marks on the Hasaki as well as the Mune. Here is the link to my Photobucket album. You can enlarge each of the HD photos (88 in total) separately by clicking on the magnifying glass. That way even more detail can be seen. You can make the image even larger when it is enlarged in photobucket, by right clicking on it, view image, then enlarge it again using the mouse pointer which turns into a magnifying glass. NOTE: There are four pages of photos. Click on "My sword" to go to the overview page to skip to the next page of photos. Eyes see more than cameras and the full beauty of the blade is still hidden. But in normal light or under a bulb it really shows a lot of beautiful glistening, glimmering and sparkling. It comes alive somehow. Any comments and remarks on things I missed out on or am mistaken about by my Nihonto collecting friends and experts are more than welcome. You might notice things I have not seen.yet. KM

Translation Assistance - Child's Katana (I Think)
kusunokimasahige replied to TroyCHunt's topic in Translation Assistance
It might even be for a Bunraku doll. They sometimes have the size of small kids. -
Well I can tell you that they are based on Samurai headdress when not wearing a helmet. And not on a tenugui but on a specific variant of the eboshi. In this movie you will be able to see exactly what headdress they were based upon : http://www.dramatv.tv/watch-drama/kumamoto-monogatari-ep-2-english-sub.html

With images of that quality and composition I would not even consider going there. -

Pity I still do not know if my sword is pre or post Meiji restoration. Looking forward to that book. -

There are only a few people in my view who should touch this sword and polish it if that is necessary at all. Fujishiro Okisato Sensei. Fujishiro Tatsuya Sensei Yoshihiko Usuki Sensei Tsuyoshi Morodomi Sensei All can be found on facebook but you can also get people on the board to help you contact them. You could also ask mr. Paul Martin to help you contact them or act as a go between. At least then you can be certain of supberb polishing quality, notwithstanding proficient Western polsihers who were FULLY trained in Japan, (which means +/- 10 years apprenticeship with a Japanese polisher) Please avoid half-trained home schooled polishers. They will ruin the blade. KM
