  1. Congrats! Great looking collection you've got there.
  2. John Tirado is only an hour away from me and did a wonderful job on a new one. He also did some restoration work on the original habaki. Great guy
  3. Ended up sending the blade to Yoshihiko Usuki in Japan. His shop was a pleasure to work with and got the job done in less than three months. Couldn't be happier!
  4. I found this little forgotten treasure hidden in a closet of a relative's house. Signed Taira Nobuhide, and passed shinsa in Tampa with eligibility for the yushu shinsa in Japan.
  5. So this is the second time in a week we've seen dodgy dealings with this guy, and no one has left him negative feedback to warn future buyers?
  6. Looks like a very nice choice. Props for having the discipline to not rush your first purchase.
  7. Thank you for squeezing me in at the last minute and for the countless hours I have no doubt you spent arranging something of this magnitude.
  8. I found this in a hollowed out hidden compartment along a doorframe while helping a relative clean out their house. I informed them of it's potential value, but they insisted I keep it as they wouldn't have ever found it otherwise and knew I would care for it.
  9. It passed shinsa in Tampa today with 78 points. I entered the hobby around 6 months ago when I found this blade and want to sincerely thank everyone on this forum for sharing so much valuable information on a daily basis. I wouldn't even consider myself a novice yet but I am learning more every day. Thank you! PS: Check your closets thoroughly people!
  10. Hope this helps. http://nihontoclub.com/smiths/KIY183 http://nihontoclub.com/smiths/KIY182 http://nihontoclub.com/smiths/KIY174 http://www.christies.com/lotfinder/arms-armor/a-bizen-katana-signed-bizen-kuni-ju-5565665-details.aspx
  11. Was the nakago cleaned? Wouldn't we expect more patina? I attached a blade dated 1864 for comparison that is coincidentally headed to Tampa this week.
  12. My understanding is that a lot of kogatana out there are gimei. It certainly looks like a nice blade though. Did Mr. Tirado make the habaki as well?
  13. I found a listing for a wakizashi with hozon papers. Doesn't seem like a match to my eyes. Did you purchase it from Nihonto.us? http://www.tokka.biz/sword/toshinaga.html
  14. I wonder if the presence of this flaw could have been what 'saved' this blade from being shortened in the first place? If that were actually the case then isn't the kizu owed a certain degree of respect for having a hand in allowing us to study an unaltered piece of history? Note that these speculations (from a novice) are operating under the assumption that the blade was actually damaged in battle pre-edo.
