John Tirado is only an hour away from me and did a wonderful job on a new one. He also did some restoration work on the original habaki. Great guy

Ended up sending the blade to Yoshihiko Usuki in Japan. His shop was a pleasure to work with and got the job done in less than three months. Couldn't be happier!

I found this little forgotten treasure hidden in a closet of a relative's house. Signed Taira Nobuhide, and passed shinsa in Tampa with eligibility for the yushu shinsa in Japan.

I found this in a hollowed out hidden compartment along a doorframe while helping a relative clean out their house. I informed them of it's potential value, but they insisted I keep it as they wouldn't have ever found it otherwise and knew I would care for it.

It passed shinsa in Tampa today with 78 points. I entered the hobby around 6 months ago when I found this blade and want to sincerely thank everyone on this forum for sharing so much valuable information on a daily basis. I wouldn't even consider myself a novice yet but I am learning more every day. Thank you! PS: Check your closets thoroughly people!

Was the nakago cleaned? Wouldn't we expect more patina? I attached a blade dated 1864 for comparison that is coincidentally headed to Tampa this week.

My understanding is that a lot of kogatana out there are gimei. It certainly looks like a nice blade though. Did Mr. Tirado make the habaki as well?

I wonder if the presence of this flaw could have been what 'saved' this blade from being shortened in the first place? If that were actually the case then isn't the kizu owed a certain degree of respect for having a hand in allowing us to study an unaltered piece of history? Note that these speculations (from a novice) are operating under the assumption that the blade was actually damaged in battle pre-edo.

Looks like a Chinese fake to me but I'm sure someone with more knowledge will clarify.

I can't comment much on differences in the chisel strokes or yasurime but my understanding is that sophisticated methods exist to artificially patinate nakago.

Seems like a fair starting price to me (a novice) on a gorgeous blade. Keep in mind there are over six days left in the auction.

Thanks everyone once again for advising me on this. Woody Hall will be polishing the blade just in time for shinsa in Tampa. Hope to see some of you guys there.

If you are safely able to remove the tsuka from the nakago (tang) without damaging either then do so and upload some shots of both sides of the full nakago sans tsuka. Hopefully there will be some markings under there that might help you identify the maker and date of the blade.
