morning Lars, can you please post some crisper photos of the blade, the kissaki looks ok to me. maybe some one tried to burnish the shinogi-ji at home because theres some funny looking skuffs running onto the kissaki. pitty about the drilled mekugi ana x2, they look like they were done by a white person due to the odd (crap)placement. but on the hole, IMHO I agree with your opinion on sue-bizen, the sori is simular to the "so called bundle swords" of that time. is it dated Kind regards H

Dave, forget the dam bloody blade, the topic I started has no bearing on the blade, its all about the pilots gunto koshire. FORGET THE BLOODY FAMILY BLADE, its a misconstrued term anyway. its all about the fittings, I was pointing out to those who may not be familiar with "put to geather jobs". just look at the length of the tsuka, the bad modern binding, the basic fittings, not being shin gunto. incorrect menuki. just like a 1883 admirals flag sword koshire, its most likely more scarce then the blade housed inside

Flag sword or admirals, but this is a very early version, as its the same size and guard design as the 1873 to 1883 naval swords. which is interesting because the admirals swords were thought to be from 1883 to 1912. enjoy.

its the " run of the mill" pierced shin gunto tsuba. the copper plate that was mentioned earlier, is almost gone, but you can see it in places. the base metal is bronze/brass. sorry nothing exotic

bazza is dead on the money, look inside nakago ana in the tsuba and it will probably show you bronze/brass. for a minute I thought it was something unusal

Hi hxv, well iv never seen it, but I am only one person. But I do have a rare cast iron shin gunto tsuba, and have seen a complete gunto koshire made out of iron, so nothing is impossible, why do you ask?

well IMHO, I think the nakago has been wielded and the patina (if you call it that) attempted to age the grind marks over, the mei is so out of place its not funny.

Dave all your photos show civilan mounted swords (wakizashi) you can see the kurikata's on the saya and full tsuaka's making them pre-1934.so not gunto but rather wakizashi slighty changed for military service try and forget the samurai sword or family sword stuff. its all about the koshire. a pilots shin gunto is made EXACTLY the same as a type 94/97 shin gunto, just proprtioanlly smaller, the 2 tsuka are shown for Steve

yep, if original, is very rare, to find a crew shin gunto with custom metal saya, normally they just made them out of wood, with a leather cover. some one just got a bargin, I would go so far as to say there evan RARER the Gen's grade Kyu gunto.

I do love Magoroku kanemoto works. But im a real novice with quality mino works, but iv never seen suck a busy hamon on a mino koto blade before. but here a 2 magoroku kanemoto to compare to. heres a mumei, Kyu gunto, with shakudo foil seppa. I sent this to a togi, who removed 2 bends, and after that he noticed that it had some work done in it in the past, to remove some damaged to the cutting edge. so its had a interesting life.
