  1. Can i ask a question about the ranking system for smiths? Is this not a reference to the potential of specific blades produced by the Smith rather than all blades would be of this quality? Eg his best work would be Jo Saku but some may be mediocre?? Often wondered. Regards
  2. As people have already said there are several sellers from Japan listing items at truly astronomical prices. Some of which is pretty mediocre stuff or covered in verdigris and wear of gilt. I was looking at something last night at around £7000. I was taken aback by the cost of this sellers items. Still you don't have to buy I guess.
  3. I have had some help from Marcus on this and he has said the mei reads Ōju (應需), which means “made on request.” Ranzan Tsuneyuki. So a special order which I thought it might be. Just added for future research reference for somebody.
  4. Interested in no 4
  5. Thanks Pete, everyone.
  6. Thank you. The first suggested title is not available anywhere online. The second Grey has as linked thank you. . Q:Why is Haynes recommended as additional reference rather than primary? Not as comprehensive? Thank you
  7. Thank you Ford, I thought this might be the case. Do you perhaps know of another resource that provides photographic evidence of a mei and Kao as written on a piece of artwork ? Are these KAKIHAN actually a language in themselves in that they mean something specific.? Or even generally? Thank you
  8. I'll take more later today.
  9. Likely means little or nothing then? Perhaps it's a new owners name or a shop inventory mark. I believe it is oil tempered as I cannot see any hataraki.
  10. Hi, when we look at jolys kakihan are we expecting his calligraphy skills to be perfect or are the kakihan open to some variances due to his perhaps inept skill at copying exactly what he has seen. Where were his sources taken from, other books or tosogu mei as written by the validated artists? I gather this is not a definitive list just the ones he was exposed to? Any thoughts as a reference I need to understand its value. Thank you Adam
  11. Ah brilliant. Thanks for the link. Also apologies for the typo in original post. Its Yokoya. Thanks for pointing this out.
  12. Still a Smith made Kogatana Bazza without a doubt. Regards Adam
  13. Not sure looks like a gunto but with a really strange crab claw hamon.
  14. Kokubo hito?
  15. Hello can anyone (and I appreciate its a huge ask) Read this mei for me. It's four characters. Regards Adam
  16. Yes I can see this also. I think its a Very good call as well. Thank you for finding this. Adam
  17. Both items have been withdrawn from sale for now. Thank you Adam
  18. I like it but I think your right it's possible it's on its last polish. I have a very similar one and that's also on its final polish but I still get enjoyment from it. It's got great age and if it's affordable and inspirational then it's still got to be good for the soul. A polisher would give better advice though.
  19. I remember many years ago having a sword that was almost blue in its steel colour. I've never seen the like before or since.
  20. Is that Nobu Kuni? 信國 I think there were at least 62 smiths used that art name so dating it will be critical to pinpoint the actual smith.
  21. Is that Nobu Kuni? 信國
  22. Fingers crossed the OP photocopied the original and left the appraisal itself intact.
  23. I would suggest offering it on here first as ebay fees can be high. Especially if PayPal is Used. You may need to offer an inspection period or produce far better images and a return policy. Ebay has risk of rejection as well. If you place a figure you would be happy with you will at least get feedback or a sale. It's not going to be an expensive sword, but it's worth is, as always, what someone is willing to pay for it.
  24. Why would they suggest that an assistant would be needed to draw the scabbard? The blade is less than 1m. Just curious really, if you hold it next to the tsuba.... it's long but not unusually so.
  25. This OP's tsuba or a similar tsuba is on ebay 124198127954 $690 sellers in Japan it states.
