  1. Here’s the video: https://zacke.smugmug.com/Fine-Japanese-Art-Auction-4621/Lot-07/i-5C37nNT/A The auction is tomorrow, good stuff but generally beyond my means: https://www.zacke.at/auction/details/JAP0621-fine-Japanese-art/?au=26
  2. Nothing special, the title question just reminded me of the Full Metal Jacket character who names his rifle "Charlene" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LjXadFaSAJM
  3. It's a different auction house - this one in Belgium. "Drouot Digital" is an aggregator site for auctions. Of all the explanations proposed above, "bokken tsuba" seems the least unlikely to me, but what do I know.

  5. Yes, the other side is decorated: BTW, this is the link to the auction in the (unlikely!) case that anybody is interested: https://www.drouotonline.com/l/15215803--tsuba-en-bronze-patine-a-deco
  6. Congratulations, a beginner collector with six Juyo-level blades seems a rather exceptional beast...
  7. The hole is nicely framed by the decoration, it does not look like it was added later.
  8. Hi All, This object is currently on sale in a French auction. It is described as a tsuba but it's obviously something else, it looks as if it would be attached to the saya rather than the blade. If that is the case, what would be the point of simulating a tsuba?
  9. The results of these Parisian auctions are usually posted after a few days.
  10. Tatsunao on Yahoo Japan:
  11. Three Namitoshi on Yahoo Japan:
  12. In the NBTHK museum it was explicitly allowed to take photos of the blades but not of the fittings (if I remember correctly they did stop me when I tried to sneak a picture of tsuba). I don’t recall any restrictions in the National Museum, where I took plenty of pictures and even interacted with the guards asking for information about the exhibits.
  13. These are from the National Museum:
  14. At the end of 2018 I was in Tokyo for a conference and it turned out that my hotel was just next to the NBTHK museum (I saw a flier about it in the reception). I went there and took some pictures, but I had no clue about what I was looking at (not sure I would be wiser now!). I've just bumped into those pictures again, I post them here for your enjoyment, after reducing their size. It's clear that I was attracted by nakago and kissaki, the importance of sugata was lost on me at the time...

  16. Way above my head, but in case someone is interested... https://www.tessier-sarrou.com/catalogue/113434?
  17. Thanks! Better save the picture before it disappears:
  18. A nice Tatsutoshi just showed up in another NMB thread: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/35568-museum-book-mei-translations/?do=findComment&comment=367781
  19. One thing you may train your eye on is the density and regularity of the nanako. In higher-end pieces it becomes difficult to even believe that it could have been made by hand... . (NOTE: I pulled these at random from Bonhams & Christies sales, TBH I'm not even sure that they qualify as high-end).
  20. I recall that the pseudo-kozuka for Western cutlery were often decorated on both sides. There was a thread about the topic some time ago: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/29927-your-thoughts-on-these-kozuka-dinner-knives/
  21. I don’t know why you find it necessary to attack me for trying to make the discussion progress beyond name calling. I really had a hard time understanding Thomas’ explanations about “DIN 4” because, frankly, he can’t write proper English. I wanted to rule out the possibility of a misunderstanding: maybe he thought that he was selling the original books, or maybe those are the original books. Since it’s now clear that they aren’t, the remaining explanations are ignorance or dishonesty.
  22. I don’t mean to condone Thomas’ aggressive tone, although it might be due in part to his poor mastering of English. However, can we rule out the possibility that the 1991 edition was itself photocopied on low-quality office paper? Maybe someone who owns it could clarify.
  23. I don't understand this comment, all members can see who voted what.
  24. I know nothing about blades, but one thing I would ask myself is why a quality blade currently located in Tokyo does not have papers.
