  1. Gentlemen, no panic necessary or impending! :D This is a papered blade. I already have an attribution. It was simply my hope to gin up some conversation from this group prior to posting it. However, I will endeavor to answer some of Geraint’s questions and post some more relevant pictures in the next few days. Perhaps this will help some:
  2. Any guesses on time period, smith, etc,? Let me know if you need to see something better and I will do my best to take more pictures.
  3. Again, apologies for the quality. That video looks much better on my phone than it does on here. Probably the level of quality from compression...
  4. So, made my first couple of leaps into stewardship lately. This is my first Katana. A mumei piece. Just under 65cm nagsa, kasane of .73cm. Motohaba of 3.06cm and sakihaba of 2.14cm, with a weight of 730 grams. Overall there is a feeling of slenderness to me. I don't have much to compare to, that is just my "feeling". I'll post more details, but figure I would leave some room for discussion and guesses before posting the attribution. I welcome any and all thoughts. My apologies for the less than wonderful pictures, this was my first attempt. And it looks like it will be multiple posts as I can't figure out how to down size these...
  5. To my novice eyes, the nakago looks suriage (shortened).
  6. I just purchased from AOI. Shipment from Japan took right around a month from payment. Shipment was via UPS and once actually shipped was fairly quick. Only hiccup was them needing to contact me for some tax number and not actually leaving a message. Be sure to watch for unknown callers once you reach that point. I can't really speak to Samurai Museum Shop. I emailed them on two different blades, twice, and they never responded.
  7. Huh. Super weird. Very interesting.
  8. Hmmm...I suppose I can remember wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy back to my home-ec class and those sewing skills, lol. Might be worth a try.
  9. Before I pull the trigger on the one I'm looking at (polyester?), is there any suggestions on sources for a sword pillow and other supplies? I can find a number of places offering mekugi-nuki, for instance, but not sword pillows.
  10. Thanks, Chris. I emailed and called and it seems to have gotten things moving again. Never have gotten another call from these folks, so who knows, but with luck I should see packages the end of this week or sometime next. Since my phone call, we've progressed to Alaska and now to Kentucky, so definitely making progress.
  11. My take on that specific question, is that when we discuss "high & low quality" we are talking about the smith's work. Just like in any other discussion of Nihonto, there are both high and low quality blades, regardless of the period. We don't have to get into mass production to see low(er) quality of blades. I'll be curious to hear the more knowledgeable folks take on that, though...
  12. Minor hijack, since we are discussing shipping. Super annoyed right now as it SEEMS like UPS called this morning 3 times. I say seems, because they didn't leave a message, and now won't answer their phone. I have my phone set to silence unknown callers, but when they called three times I figured it must be something. Looked up the phone number and it turns out it's part of UPS that deals with clearance. So of course, now that I WANT to hear from them, I can't get ahold of them. Who doesn't leave a voicemail in this situation? Grrrrr...
  13. I believe you are referring to Genpuku, which is the coming of age ceremony. I've heard these swords referred to as Genpuku-To as well, but haven't done much research. A little confusing as I was under the impression that this was when the Samurai child came of age to wear full-size swords, but I could have that wrong. Then again, the ceremony had no set age. Anywhere from very early teens to 17-18 I believe, depending on when the youth was judged to have reached the maturity and skill-level required. So for those very young on the scale, perhaps the "boy's swords" made sense and for those on the older side, standard sized blades would do.
  14. Is it just my newb eyes, or does something look "off" with that hamon?
  15. Funny, I was trying to form my thoughts into a decent post suggesting someone (with the knowledge to be coherent about the subject) put just such a message up and pin it.
  16. Thanks for sharing. This is a great looking package. Seems like you have plenty of takers if you decide to part with it. 😎
  17. Question regarding the katana dansu/tansu. What differentiates them from standard isho dansu? I’m guessing mainly dimensions of the drawers?
  18. Exactly, Piers. Also, I will be displaying Koshirae on the Kake.
  19. Thanks Ken. I have been looking for this as well. Finding one at this price point has been very challenging! Lol.
