Hello, Could you help me with reading of this signature "新井英寿"? It could be Eiju, Hidetoshi or Terutoshi? Thank you in advance. Krystian

I think my wishful thinking got a better of me yesterday. Right now my best idea is Saneyoshi. Either way this is one of the members of Arikawa family and there was no recorded Masayoshi among them. https://collections.mfa.org/objects/12075

I asked to check Shinsa results again. And they are 真義. So according to MFA it would be Saneyoshi. So It seems you where right Jean. https://collections.mfa.org/objects/12075

Thank you John. After some research I think it might be Sanetake.

Thank you so much Jean. I had trouble sleeping thinking about that signature and you pointed me to a good direction. It just might be Saito Sanetake? https://collections.mfa.org/objects/12079 And I already had Arikawa Sanetake tsuba in the past..... https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?id=1950696455168229&story_fbid=2197093690528503

But It is almost 10 years before Hozon where introduced? I do not understand that.....

It looks like Koushuya (Hanamoto-san) auction. I am sure that If you ask him he will translate it for you.

Hello, Could you help me to read this mei. I thought that this is "Saito Masayoshi" but a fellow member pointed out that this is incorrect reading. Thank you in advance. Krystian

Hello, I just got this tsuba back from NBTHK Shinsa. It is signed "Saito Masayoshi" but I can't find this maker, could you help me with It? As always thank you for all comments. Krystian

In my opinion It looks like "European Dragon" with short body and big wings. It might be hard to find a traditional Japanese School of artists that used this type of dragon design. But if it is an Japanese antique this might help you with research.

tsuka restoration - jabara-maki
Krystian replied to Artur DrogaMiecza's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
This is amazing work Artur. When I commissioned It I thought that it will be a practice tsuka and only after another 3 or 10 your jabara maki will become perfect. But you made in on the first try!!! I am already looking for menuki for the next one:) -
Thank you for your comment George. A lot of people think that I went to far with this one so you are not alone. I will remove the active rust. However I wanted It to look as good as those tsuba found on Yuhindo: https://yuhindo.com/hagiya-katsuhira/ and other webistes with highest quality items. But It seems I went to far accorind to many.

and some pictures taken with the phone. Flash might have made a silver a bit brighter than it is.

Here are pictures of this tsuba after cleaning. We decided not to touch the iron base. Just clean it together with the inlay. This was a learning exercise so If possible please comment and be as harsh as possible. In the future I would like to avoid as many mistakes as possible. Thank you in advance for all the comments. This time pictures where made with strong direct flash light to show all the details and with reflected light to make it nicer to look at.

While researching this subject I found a book wrote only about Tengu and It's history. I think I will have to add it to my book collection:) Tengu: The Shamanic and Esoteric Origins of the Japanese Martial Arts

Thank you all for comments. I value greatly each and every information you shared. In my opinion though this piece is not valuable enough to send It to Ford who is one of the best in the field and works on some of the best tsuba I have ever seen. While it is similar to Tanaka School tsuba I do not get the same "calm" feeling as I get when looking at real deal. So I think that it is worth around 1000 - 1500 $ at best. Based on that I will have it restored here in Poland by a friend of mine who is a great tsuba maker and hopefully thanks to the experience he will gain on this and other projects one day he will also be recognized as a professional tsuba restorer. We will offcours try to get as many valuable information about how to proceed with this tsuba as possible. I will share photos of this one when it is done. Thank you again.

The rim is part of the tsuba, no fukurin. They are 69 x 60 x 5 mm. However I still think It needs proper cleaning:)

Hello, Here is an interesting menuki set I found in an old damaged tsuk. They where so dirty that It was hard to see what to motifs are. But here is how they are after proper cleaning. Best Regards, Krystian

Based on those pictures I think that silver was patineted black. So for now I will just clean it and leave silver as it is.

Some more pictures. I have made them with strong flash and with added contrast so you can see everything clearly.

Thank you. I will make some better quality pictures and conntact Ford Hallam than. I will also post them here. I will also look for Y shaped punch on nunome zogan. Thank you for that tip Steven.

Only similar design tsuba I could find are Tanaka School. So I think I will proceed with assumption that it is or is inspired by Tanaka School.
