  1. The condition of these is absolutely superb, I'm glad it is still together after all these years as well. The blade of the dress sword is a little different than usually found on these; looks like a Murata-To style blade.
  2. Mumei Seki-To, would need clearer pictures of the blade to determine anymore. As for the tassel it's not radically unusual to see company grade tassels on Kai Gunto, whether original is difficult to 100% confirm now.
  3. From what I can tell the only limiting factors were the cost of mounting a large blade and it being suitable for the officer.
  4. Would like to add Neil is a pleasure to deal with and knows how to pack a sword very safely for shipping.
  5. As someone with a decided fascination with LARGE Shin Gunto I would suggest it is more likely to be either an old blade or custom made Gendaito matched to a taller individual. These two blade types have been the most commonly encountered, at least in my findings.
  6. They use original blades and parts but cannot be considered true Gunto. Interesting enough to many collectors for the right price.
  7. As long as everyone (dealer & buyer) is fully aware a sword is Gimei then there isn't too much of an issue if the buyer likes the sword. The trouble begins once any ambiguity from a dealer comes into play, or even vice versa where the buyer purchases a known Gimei from one market (Japan) and then tries to flog it to another (western) as genuine. You would have a Gimei removed if you wanted to submit to Shinsa.
  8. The Tsuka looks to be of good quality.
  9. Would be well over 2kgs with a chain hanger + all the other weapons and equipment carried....I can see why many of them had the lighter weight saya.
  10. How heavy are they compared to a Koa Isshin Mantetsu? That is my heaviest sword by far, all my large Nagasa swords are in either wood or aluminium Saya.
  11. It does appear as if the saya is covered in a thin leather and this piece was added at the same time. Very curious indeed. Please check your PM's Michael BTW.
  12. Made by Asano Kanezane, this has some odd features like an Army Tsuka with naval menuki, blue Ito, a unusual coloured tassel. Does the latch lock into the saya throat or is there a piece missing?
  13. Have we had any comparisons of the same smith in Type 98 & Type 3 mounts yet?
  14. Definitely have seen Chuso with stripes before, unusual but authentic.
  15. Ah it was Emura then, one of his earlier works it seems.
  16. From memory Gary has shared quite a few fine blades with Saidan Mei as well.
  17. Very faded but it is a company grade tassel, so the officer who owned it was a Lieutenant or Captain.
  18. Larry I'm not sure where the gremlins are getting into your photos but most of them are not showing up. I suggest checking the photos are less than 2mb each and waiting until they are fully uploaded in the add photo screen. From the two that have come through it looks like you have a very nice sword, the Tsuba has the Suya Shoten stamp on it, Suya made high quality goods for the military, especially sword mounts. If you take a cotton tip and clean out all of the gunk it will look like this:
  19. @IJASWORDS Has many hallmarks of a Type 94, or at least nice early Type 98.
  20. That photo Chris posted is the one that swayed me, the polish is very good and I wonder if it may be semi-traditionally made but quenched in oil.
  21. Yes, it does appear to be oil tempered. Biggest indicator are the dark spots at the top of the hamon peaks.
