Attention Mantetsu Owners: A Survey
BANGBANGSAN replied to Bruce Pennington's topic in Military Swords of Japan
Here is a Mantetsu in China, I think it's possible a high-grade copy(Original Gunto Fitting and Japanese blade with the fake signature). What do you guys think? -
鍛 -Forge

There is no toilet paper shortage now

Steve I don't think it's a Chinese fake either. The shape of the blade doesn't look bad at all. But the Bohi and Nakago are a little unusual, never saw any island swords have two holes on the Nakago like Rinji before. It has better looking and quality than most of the Island sword. Could it be one of the swords made in the theater by the Japanese?
-
Steve I agree with you. Some of these swords are genuine, some not. To me, as long as the numbers on the blade in the right range, changed iron guard, or add a screw on the handel(either wartime repair or later work) is still considering the first pattern but not fully original.Copper Handel with the high numbered blade is not.

Joe Ohmura San did mention few wavy Hamon Mantetsu blades exist,it should be special order one. I have one, and I think Neil got one as well. http://ohmura-study.net/222.html 筆者注 例外的に乱刃が存在する。恐らく特注品であろう。 -
Some people might never change the way they used to, just like MOST people in the western world(Collectors and dealers ) use 村田刀 Murata-To for 造兵刀 Zohei-To, even though the 造兵刀 is the official name for those swords. As far as I know what they are talking about , it's fine with me,don't want/need to correct them for the official name. I agree with the name 臨時制式 "Rinji Seishiki"not the short term 臨時 "Rinji" though. But I will still use Type 3 & Late war Type 3 when I talk to other collectors who use to that name.
