  1. I agree Ford - please don't take one comment as being the thoughts of the 2700 members of the board however and continue to share both your pictures and your knowledge as you see fit
  2. New Career ? Lovely workmanship - very jealous
  3. Great Job: I am sure all will be very happy with the change and thanks to Dr. Stein.
  4. Ahhh. That makes sense - but I suppose the statement that the ukicho will still abrade the steel is still true = I guess you just play it by ear considering your humidity etc.
  5. Jean: Considering the only abrasive part in cleaning with the solvent is the cloth or paper used - Is it that in itself or something about the solvent acting with the oil on the blade? i know at some point many collectors are well advised to stop using uichiko regularly on newly polished or after a while - any blades. With time even the powder will alter the final polishing and burnished finish on a blade.
  6. I wrote the editors of Forbes quite some time ago and had no reply or even any indication that they had received the message - It didn't come back so I assume it was received but >>? IF some think its about the money why not do the same deal but sell it for 100 grand - 80 million makes it pretty incredible for most readers to even think about if they look at the market at all. MAYBE - it is a joke
  7. Its is a lot like religion:, Those that don't believe will never have enough proof , and those that do believe -- don't need any proof.
  8. Is this "the blade" listed for sale in Forbes through an auction house in Canada after being appraised in Russia. I have to say that even as naive as I am the nakago - tank is newer and filed, the blade is the wrong shape for the era and considering the value - one would think it would be in better polish ? I sincerely hope it is worth 80 grand cause I must have at least 3 million in similar blades in my den. The other thing I recall about the last bunch of comments was that the "proof" of the appraisals and verification by the experts would be sent out to those that requested same - none seemed to appear. EDIT : Sorry I did not see the reply to Chris - the actual dollar amount that he stated the "sword" was worth - 200 could have been anything from 50 dollars to 500 and I am sure was based on the item not the value of the metal in it ! IF the changes that are noted were made to the blade then someone basically ruined it in doing whatever they were doing - like the painting restored in the church. All I know is considering what many masterpieces in Nihonto have sold for why would this be worth hundreds of times what they were and everyone agreed these others were real? I recall watching a show where an "antiques roadshow" appraiser looking at a Japanese sword and unlike English Porcelain I did know about the blade he was holding and as knowledgeable as he was in a great many different types of very ancient object he knew nothing of Nihinto and it was almost like he made it up Opinions are of course like a lot of things and we have heard some opinions saying its fake and the reasons why and the current authors assertion it is as stated but only because of the one gentleman's assessment who I have never heard of in relation to these blades. I wonder if the author has shown the blade in hand to a KNOWN expert in Japanese blades only ? Why not send it to Shinsa and get it papered and then - make some guesses as to value.
  9. Unless you can actually hold the blade, have no problems returning same - as I have no knowledge of the seller unless you are also in Poland I would stay away from this one.
  10. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7381&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=polish&start=75 Link to discussion re: different polishes - half way down is a blade with the whole side polished !
  11. I am constantly amazed at the workmanship and artistic ability of those that do this sort of work -not to mention the patience. Dave this particular procedure for the entire helmet must take months !! Thanks for taking the time from your work to share.

  16. I am not sure how many members would have picked up on this exhibit in Montreal - only wish I were closer but it is there for a while and thanks to the folks that brought it to my attention, Samauridenis - but no name ! Pretty nice pictures and there is a book as well. Anyone interested on armour would be well worth a trip http://pacmusee.qc.ca/en/exhibitions/sa ... d-beliveau
  17. A wise man once told me if everyone always agreed with you one of you is redundant and often the danger of agreeing is that you both may be wrong. Anyone that can't take advice from someone who knows more than they do is nor really smart. Evidence based decisions are always the best - too many people try and show decision based evidence which doesn't really hold for very long. I thank all the wise men here as well - especially out esteemed moderators and AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO our illustrious moderator in chief and web master Brian
  18. I guess on some level I get your point as many objects of age should be venerated or appreciated - well at least recognized for still being here instead of gone. That said when it comes to any type of art objects age in and of itself doesn't equal anything other than it is old - could be like me - old and not particularly good looking. Rocks are REALLY old. As far as this forum goes all you have to do when reading your library of books on Nihonto check the authors against NMB contributors and there is an amazing overlap. You would have to pay a lot of money to get the information and opinions offered here freely I guess at some point in time many of the older members gets tired of answering the same questions and recommending the same learning process for newbies and from time to time may get a little snarky but as Jean said - you never met Rheinhard or Gerhart. I guess for both oldies and newbies if we got nothing good to say - say nothing. Perhaps the best advice anyone could give is use the search function on the forum - many topics have been discussed before and in fact when you search very specific topics on google - the NMB comes up. Enjoy what you like - appreciate what you want - everyone has their own tastes.
  19. Have been tempted from the site BUT haven't heard anything from anyone that I am acquainted with or even know at all - wonder where he gets his nihonto ? He has to have a source in Japan that must sell to him in bulk because I don't recall seeing many of the blades on the site anywhere else?
  20. Well will not decrease it as much as leaving the gimei one there.
  21. I have a couple of Kanemitsu - the one from Tosando province - do you have any other pictures of the blade itself
  22. Chris: Not seen one with a dozen drawers !
  23. George: Almost sounds as if you have done this before or at least put a lot of thought into the process - that said I agree with what you and others have said - it would be impossible to do it the other way around and these are the same blade.
  24. You may come to think that the unsigned nakago is a bonus :D
