Bruce Pennington Posted May 20 Report Posted May 20 Brian, Just wondering what happened yesterday afternoon (USA Mountain Time). Tried a couple times, "Server Not Found" message kept popping up. 1 2 Quote
Brian Posted May 20 Report Posted May 20 I was told there was an issue but by the time I logged in, all was working fine. The whole of SA has had some serious internet disruptions the past few days. Apparently massive DDOS attacks launched against all the ISP's, and most have had some serious problems, so I'm guessing that was part of it. No-one knows why or by whom, but it's a large one, and taken down most of the providers for a bit. I expect there may be some lingering issues over the next few days. 3 3 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted May 20 Author Report Posted May 20 Wonder what the thinking or purpose would be for a country-wide attack? What are they trying to achieve? Quote
Brian Posted May 21 Report Posted May 21 It's all over the news here, and apparently is continuing. https://mybroadband.co.za/news/internet/648580-massive-internet-problems-in-south-africa-2.html 3 1 Quote

The Blacksmith Posted May 30 Report Posted May 30 Site trouble today too. I haven't been able to look in for some six hours this afternoon. 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted May 31 Author Report Posted May 31 Yeah, me too. It was at 6:30 am Mountain Time USA. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Same here. Gave up trying to access the site, figuring it was better just to leave a block of time for it to resolve itself. Came back strongly, though. 1 Quote
Matsunoki Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Same here. “Server not found”. Off air for long periods yesterday. Quote
Brian Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Can only be the same issue, and I read some analysis of the methods being used for these attacks and they are extremely difficult for ISP's to mitigate. Just have to wait it out until the issue is over I'm afraid. 2 Quote
Toki Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Had some issues too lately, but with a VPN to South Africa, all works fine 1 Quote

ROKUJURO Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Same issues here in Germany. Sometimes slow loading, but website not available most of the day. Probably again the aliens.... 1 Quote
drbvac Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Same in Canada - world wide it seems but also resolves fairly quickly. These sort of attacks against servers and other web agencies are going to continue and get worse as these folks have nothing better to do than cause others grief just because they can. 1 1 Quote

Sebuh Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 same here, makes me actually concentrate in class though.. 1 Quote
tosogu_eu Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 Also true for Europe/ Germany. But fortunately, now it's working. Got that error: DNS_PROBE_FINISHED_NXDOMAIN Quote

Brian Posted June 2 Report Posted June 2 ISP's are slowly putting measures in place to mitigate the various attempts at DDOS. It's a very complicated process, but it's going to get better, not worse. We'll be back to normal soon. 2 3 Quote

I've had a LOT of trouble loading the site lately. Today I absolutely could not get it to load until just now, and 'just now' I set my VPN to New Zealand. (I believed until I googled it just now that .co.na was New Zealand, but now I see it's South Africa. My mistake, but still, New Zealand for routing worked to load the forum. Using some controlled internet routing allowed me to get the page to load. So it's very possible that those ddos attacks are causing a lot of trouble on the international lines? Not an expert or anything. Quote
Brian Posted Sunday at 07:15 AM Report Posted Sunday at 07:15 AM Seems to be ONLY causing trouble with international traffic. I have no problems this side, so I'm guessing the ISP's have to reduce/monitor/slow down incoming traffic. I heard the other day that some are experiencing several GIGS of data per SECOND in these attacks. Almost impossible to stop. I am looking into available options. I had hoped it would slow down soon. Whatever happens, it is temporary, we will get back to normal soon. Thank you for your patience. 3 1 Quote
Bruce Pennington Posted Sunday at 07:30 PM Author Report Posted Sunday at 07:30 PM It was just loading slowly for me this morning, but workable. Fine now. Quote
Matsunoki Posted Monday at 05:50 AM Report Posted Monday at 05:50 AM Lots of trouble yesterday. Slow or very slow or “give up” Quote
Brian Posted 2 hours ago Report Posted 2 hours ago Can I ask ppl to keep me updated if and when you are having issues accessing the forum? It works fine from this side, so need to know if there is still a lot of an issue, in order to take it up with the hosts. Thanks. 1 Quote
