kuromido Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Hello everyone, I have been trying to learn to read kanji and have found several good references to help. (D#@n this aint easy) I have had yumoto's book for some time and also have found Mr. Steins amazing site. Also the jssus has Alan Quinn's counting strokes method which has been very helpful. I am having good general success finding the name portion but am repeatedly hitting a wall on other kanji in the mei. What am I missing? Here are 2 examples. The first kozuka I have as taka,?,masa aki kao the second I could not find anywhere. The second I have as ?,? haru aki kao. Can anyone show me the path to enlightenment and fill in the blanks Any help could save the last few hairs on my head.. I appreciate everyone’s contributions to this site and hope that some year in the far--far future I might be able to do the same. Thanks--PeterD Quote
ottou812 Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 1st one: 石黒正明 + kao (Ishiguro Masaaki) 1813-1878 2nd one: 法眼春明 + kao (Hogen or Hougen Haruaki) 1787-1860 Quote
Rich S Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Peter - download Jim Meyer's pdf file of Robinson's Kanji tables. I found them of great use. Don't be discouraged. Even after 30 years of messing with these things, I still have to rely on Kanji tables and even then commonly screw up the reading :-) Jim Meyer's Kanji tables: http://home.comcast.net/~bladeshark/ Rich S Quote
Mark Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 Grey Doffin sells a set of kanji flashcards i found very helpfull when i was starting (still use them) Quote
ottou812 Posted February 25, 2010 Report Posted February 25, 2010 In order to properly read the kanji, the brush strokes are important as kanji on the computer sometimes look quite different than the kanji on the mei. Quote
kuromido Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 Thanks rich, That is quite a site. I did not know there were so many ways to come at it. Looks like Ive got some studying to do. James, Thanks for the readings, I will go back to the tables and see where I missed them. I am excited about the Haruaki piece, there is one by him in lethal elegance and the mei is very close. I do apreciate your help and marks. I probably should post pics of the fronts---- Quote
kuromido Posted February 26, 2010 Author Report Posted February 26, 2010 Here is the front of the masaaki kozuka. I wish I could put up a 1200 x 1600 it would be a much better picture. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Peter, If you crop the picture a higher resolution might fit. Grey Quote
ottou812 Posted February 26, 2010 Report Posted February 26, 2010 Peter, That looks like a very nice Masaaki piece. Quote
kuromido Posted March 4, 2010 Author Report Posted March 4, 2010 Grey, I am still messin with croping pics, My program (Camedia) wants to hang as soon as I try to crop. I think its time to uninstall and start fresh. James, Thanks for the comp. The piece has a bird with gold plumes flowing 1/2 way down the cliff. My pic is crap so you can barely make it out. I will try again. Here is a pic of the haruaki piece front. Unusual subject matter. Any info or input would be appreciated. Thanks, PeterD Quote
