PietroParis Posted January 15, 2022 Report Posted January 15, 2022 I am sure that hemp was well known in Japan – all those ships needed rigging after all – but do you think that the leaves depicted on this tsuba (see link) are really cannabis? BTW judging by the centering of the nakago-ana, the maker of the tsuba must have been a heavy user of the stuff... P.S. note once again how, in typical Catawiki fashion, the material is proudly described as "Cast iron" 1 Quote
Stephen Posted January 15, 2022 Report Posted January 15, 2022 Most likely Japanese maple leaf 6 Quote

Bugyotsuji Posted April 14, 2023 Report Posted April 14, 2023 No way either of those depictions look like cannabis. 麻の葉 Asa no ha, (hemp leaf) 麻の葉 家紋 - Bing images 2 1 Quote
Guest JoeSbs Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 anyone has come across other tsuba with what looks like hemp leaf motifs that aren't part of the usual Asanoha pattern? I'm wondering if some regional schools or individual makers played around more with that design. Would be cool to compare. Quote

Saw something similar once while browsing, and it got me curious enough to check out a *spam deleted* online. They had a huge selection and good advice, which led to a long night of talking about history, plants, and random finds. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Maple leaves as in Stephen’s photo above suggest the fall (autumn) season. They are often used in different settings and combinations. These can bear a strong resemblance to 麻 asa, (hemp) but there was never any strong message associated with hemp other than as a minor decorative motif. 1 Quote
Brian Posted October 13 Report Posted October 13 Almost always Japanese Maple rather than hemp, as Peirs said 1 Quote
