Gunome Posted June 21, 2021 Report Posted June 21, 2021 Hello, I recently see 2 teppo with a very clean barrel without rust. My knowledge about teppo is very very limited. Sorry for the basic question, but how the barrel is supposed to be ? Does the rust should be present, as on the nakago of a sword, or does it should it be in a mint steel condition ? Thanks Sébastien Quote
Anthony de Vos Posted June 21, 2021 Report Posted June 21, 2021 Hi! Don’t destroy the patina. No ”mint steel condition” please. Anthony Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 21, 2021 Report Posted June 21, 2021 The barrel should look dark brown or black. It could be black rust, or it may still carry an original coating of some kind. If it is covered in active red rust, then that should be tamed. A bright shiny barrel is one that has been stripped of any protection. Quote
Gunome Posted June 22, 2021 Author Report Posted June 22, 2021 Thanks for your reply. It is more or less what I guess, like a nakago or a tsuba: to don't touch the patina. So better if it is not cleaned. Anthony, don't worry, I won't remove any patina I just asked because I recently see 2 teppo with bright steel cleaning. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 Whoever buys them will have to attempt a restoration with some secret mixture, or with Gun Blue, Gun Brown, etc. Quote
Gunome Posted June 23, 2021 Author Report Posted June 23, 2021 I don't bought them. Ok thanks for the advise. So better avoid to buy a teppo with a shiny barrel. Good to know ! Quote
Jean Posted June 23, 2021 Report Posted June 23, 2021 Tested on my winchester ´94. There were some superficial rust spots on the barrel. I used an oil (I use it on all my guns) specially designed for aviation. Fantastic results, it gets rid of this superficial rust and coat your gun to avoid any other rust attack. 1 Quote
francois2605 Posted June 25, 2021 Report Posted June 25, 2021 Oil + aviation makes me think about WD-40. https://wd40company.com/our-company/our-history/ 1 Quote
Alex A Posted June 26, 2021 Report Posted June 26, 2021 I use something called ballistol, seems decent but does smell a bit weird. 1 Quote
