Bugyotsuji Posted October 29, 2019 Report Posted October 29, 2019 On the front at the top is a character that might be 伊 ...? On the reverse are two characters that could be... 旅 斿...? and 㐂? Any help appreciated! 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 29, 2019 Author Report Posted October 29, 2019 And if anyone is extra bored, there is also a Mei and cartouche on the reverse to play with. I do have some ideas, but I will hold them back for the moment! Clean slate time, folks. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 29, 2019 Author Report Posted October 29, 2019 PS No, not much to see here; it's just a boring old Obi-hasami Netsuke... Quote
SteveM Posted October 29, 2019 Report Posted October 29, 2019 I agree it sure looks like 伊 On the other side, I think 於㐂 ? (said without much confidence) 1 Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted October 29, 2019 Report Posted October 29, 2019 Piers, Very nice staghorn Asakusa school piece, you've found another interesting one. Adding/added to the collection? Cheers, -S- 2 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 29, 2019 Author Report Posted October 29, 2019 Thanks for those, Steve x2. It just kind of floated this way, so I guess it will go into the old box... Recently Reinhard posted an interesting thread regarding Asakusa, arguing that 'school' may be a misnomer. http://forums.netsuke.org/viewtopic.php?f=494804&t=8080765 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 29, 2019 Author Report Posted October 29, 2019 Thinking about possible owners for a moment, the 伊達 family used this character. Quote

Reinhard has a good point, I think many of us understand this, but as we prefer order to chaos the old convention will probably continue. Cheers, -S- p.s.- That old box must be getting large and heavy. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 29, 2019 Author Report Posted October 29, 2019 Asakusa fall,Stag antler Netsuké, but,No room in the box. 2 Quote

TETSUGENDO Posted October 30, 2019 Report Posted October 30, 2019 The more the merrier, guite a few of the usual suspects are conspicuously absent....hopefully they'll find their way back. Meanwhile we could always start a haiku thread. Cheers, -S- 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted October 30, 2019 Author Report Posted October 30, 2019 Haiku thread!?!?! Let’s do it. Oh, and in the oval cartouche, could that be Meiji 30, by any stretch of the imagination? Quote
TETSUGENDO Posted October 30, 2019 Report Posted October 30, 2019 It's a beauty Piers! Cheers, -S- 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 This rare silver example came up on a Netsuké site, and I was wondering whether any of our experts might be able to extract some information from the writing? 2 Quote
Bazza Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 Is the coloured stuff SHIPPOU??? BaZZa. Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 Well, that is a good question, BaZZa. Not sure where the parameters of shippo (cloisonne') are. This is not my Netsuke, but I will ask the owner. Quote
Bazza Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 Oh, all right then. As soon as I saw this image a tsuba I had 30++ years ago flashed into my mind. It was iron, round, very rudimentary looking with simple decoration. It had a "ring" that suggested to me the iron was "good". The main feature I recall was a mountain-looking hump with lines across it, very much like the image above. Call me silly, but I thought it looked like a mountain, and Piers' cartouche in the above image looks to me like a stylised mountain with a stream running past it... BaZZa. 1 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 24, 2019 Author Report Posted December 24, 2019 BaZZa, you have a creative mind! Although I do not know what it means I was playing with the idea that the left ideogram might be a combination of 月and 日 for the left character of 明治 Meiji. The river on the right with a crossing could be the kanji 卅 (another way of writing 三十), giving a possible date of Meiji 30. Any good? Quote
Bazza Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 Goodness gracious me Mrs McCree!!! Talk about creative... Meiji 30, who wooda thunk it!! I guess we might have a definitive translation if we live long enough???? BaZZa. 1 Quote
SteveM Posted December 24, 2019 Report Posted December 24, 2019 The writing on the silver item reminds me of the writing on this ukiyoe by Eisen https://ukiyo-e.org/image/mfa/sc222268 The writing (and the character) are from a kabuki play. I don't know if the writing on the silver netsuke is at all related (I think its a long shot), but I post this here because some times the long shots can lead to other clues. 3 Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted December 25, 2019 Author Report Posted December 25, 2019 What a great print, Steve! Eisai rocks! Very reminiscent, I agree, especially with the diagonal writing. Quote
