nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Found this item at auction later today. Wondering if anyone can say anything about it.. of course knowing not much for pictures coupled with sandpaper and inability to get a look at the nakago There is not much to go on.. It is 28.25 inches long, 1 3/8 inch thick and almost 3/8 inch wide Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 Just noticed a picture of a different sword snuck in there at the end. God-bless using the phone as a computer. Quote
dwmc Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Appears to be an Shinshinto era sword fitted in Shingunto mountings. O-kissaki, futastu hi with with rather elegant horimono on one side. Even with the light sanding, the blade appears to be good condition. Would love to see nakago and if it is signed. I would definitely bid up to the $1000 +- range... Good Luck, Dave Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 I appreciate the reply. Shinshinto was my thought as I recently purchased something not dissimilar at auction for entirely too much money. This does seem to be a improved version of my previous mistake hopefully Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 To my knowledge no one has seen the nakago.. spoke with the auction house and the manager said as far as he knows the consigner and auction house have no idea and have not been able to get the handle off. Something about a gamble is always exciting but very seldom works out.. 1 Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Do you have a link to the auction? Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 I would not consider myself technologically literate enough to post a thing of the sort but it is not online. I found out about it locally and what pictures I have have been emailed to me Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 Well the auction is over and it is mine. We will see tomorrow once I pick up if I am sad or not.. Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 Scratch that, just spoke with the auction house and my bid was contingent on it not being bent and evidently a theoretical specialist said that it was bent so they withdrew my bid. I guess that's good news as I don't want to deal with something of that sort Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 I would not consider myself technologically literate enough to post a thing of the sort [...] ??? Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 So did this sword sell to someone else then? Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 I thought it was mine as it sold for under my Max absentee bid but in speaking with the auction house they withdrew my bid as I told them I was not interested in dealing with a bent item Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Well, I do not think that this is a Shinshinto blade. I would want to think that it is Koto and that someone got something with great potential. Quote
dwmc Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Geez, they only mention the bent blade until after the auction ended.... Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 I don't care much for a bent ... Quote
Brian Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 That was a huge mistake missing out on it. I suspect huge.I am sure someone here will post it for info sooner or later. Wow....I really liked the look of that one. What did it go for? Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 Yeah I was told by the manager earlier that it was not bent but I guess as the auction was on going someone else looked at it. I probably would not have withdrawn my bid honestly but in speaking to the manager I told him that I was glad to hear it was not bent as I did not have interest in a bent sword so he took that as a need to withdraw Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 I have a need for good swords ... not straight ones. 1 Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 It is just guessing right now but this sword does not look Shishinto to me and if Koto could prove to be an important piece. Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 nature of things. If I was at the auction I'm sure I would have kept bidding for a little bit but no use crying over spilt milk.. Quote
raynor Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Okissaki, horimono, popping hamon.. yep that is surely something else dressed up as gendaito. Quote
Stephen Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Head slap...bends are easy fix. Too bad you got cold feet. Quote
Brian Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Well....there is no telling how high the winner was prepared to go....so best to think that maybe he had an unlimited budget. Quote
Stephen Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Ok i read it wrong thought he won then asked if bent told so so he backed out. Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 A bend is only a problem if it has caused a Hagire. Any good polisher can fix a bend ... much less worse than a ugly nick - to which there is no fix. This sword was looking very interesting. Of course in the worst case it was juts some Meiji periode piece .... but I do not think so. Quote
ChrisW Posted April 2, 2019 Report Posted April 2, 2019 Bends that don't cause stress fractures/cracks are easily fixed by a professional. Never let bends dissuade you if they're just cosmetic. A lot of good swords have seen a lot of use and pick up a bend or two. They are designed to bend instead of break after all. Whereas a lot of European blades tend to shatter instead of bend. Quote
nickm Posted April 2, 2019 Author Report Posted April 2, 2019 As it stands it is chalked up as a disappointment on my end but such is life and nothing lost just nothing gained either. I am sharing the sentiment of Brian in finding solace with the fact that the buyer may have gone to exceedingly higher than he did and I would have been priced out anyway. Quote
