I hope this isn't a laughable proposition. Back in 2009 I posted a thread here about an interesting knife I have in my possession. It's not something I ever really had true interest in. I'm really hoping somebody here would like it and will appreciate it.

See original thread here: http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/3718-can-you-tell-me-what-you-think-of-this-knife-special/?fromsearch=1

I reassembled the knife years ago, but the wooden peg was lost. One of the responses back in 09 said knives like this might sell for $250 - $400. If anybody is interested, I'd sell at $250. Feel free to make an offer, I will not be insulted. Condition is basically the same, let me know if you're interested and I'll send pictures taken today.

The knife has been sold (pending payment, but I feel like it's a done deal).

If anything changes I'll post back here.

Thanks for all the interest! This seems like a great and very active community.

I will come to me. Its paid for by now. Dan has been a great seller to deal with. It will go to a loving caring home down under.

Steve, what do you mean clean it up? How would you do it? A professional  polisher?

I dont think it warrants that now. Maybe after the rust is removed and uchikoing you see something worth a polish.

Mainly tap off habaki and stop the red rust.

Hi Stephen, the habaki was rusted on, so loosened it with a soaking of penetrating oil (I regularly use this on my nuts) . With a bit of jiggling the habaki came loose. The red rust was removed using a piece of bone to scrape it off.

On your advice, the blade was uchiko'ed and more active rust was removed.

A hamon became more visible. As you can see from the photos, it is not a cut down blade, but was purpose made.

So where to now, it is now in a state of preservation, with all active rust gone.

If it is worth it, I would be prepared to have polisher finish it off.

Thanks Dan, I would love to bring it back to its former glory, (professionally), at the moment it is now stabilized. It has no active corrosion, a new mekugi peg, and could exist comfortably for years.

I appreciate your candor, but there are things we really don't need to know ...

Neil,

the blade is signed TAMBA no KAMI YOSHIMICHI - just in case you didn't know. There are several generations, and the MEI is one of the most faked, unfortunately,

And all the best for your other precious items....  :glee:

I think you'll get better results oiling the shaft and letting it slowly soak into your nuts, for those really stubborn ones....

Good job, id spend a month uchikoing and see what you have. Not sure a major player would take it on. really no hurries as you have saved it from rusting away.

Gimei or not it is a nice looking ww2 Tanto with a eyecandy shape and hamon. And the best is, it was very cheap. Very good purchase. A polish will not very expensive. It is a short blade.
