Blazeaglory Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 Hello all. Just wondering what this says? I think the first character is "Sada"? You guys think its a true Mei? I don't really mind as Im going to use this on a Tsuka but I'm curious. Thanks in advance Quote
Brian Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 Come now Dwain.....this one isn't difficult. Give it a go..http://www.jssus.org/nkp/kanji_for_mei.html Quote
Guest Posted December 4, 2018 Report Posted December 4, 2018 C'mon Dwain, Go for it!!! http://www.japaneseswordindex.com/kanji/kanji1.htm Count the strokes.................. Quote

Blazeaglory Posted December 5, 2018 Author Report Posted December 5, 2018 Sadayoshi or Sadayuki Den? Or Saku (in place of den) And I'm guessing they didn't sign that way? So more than likely this is Gimei? Quote
John A Stuart Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 Close. I would have thought, Sadakiyo saku, 貞精 1 Quote
Guest Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 Hi Dwain, Well done for accepting the challenge!! I agree with John on the call. Here's a great resource for counting the strokes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_kanji_by_stroke_count And a fun hand written kanji recognition tool: https://kanji.sljfaq.org/draw.html 2 Quote
Brian Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 Good try Dwain, you got 2 out of 3 kanji. Keep at it, that is a good result.First kanji to remember is that saku one, you will see it so often. Means made (by) and is on swords and fittings. 1 Quote
kissakai Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 I use stroke counting kanji with an error of ±1 strokes with Greys kanji cards Then if that doesn't work I use the Jisho website Quote
Blazeaglory Posted December 5, 2018 Author Report Posted December 5, 2018 Close. I would have thought, Sadakiyo saku, 貞精For the life of me I couldn't find that second character! Plus the variations threw me off a bit Quote
Blazeaglory Posted December 5, 2018 Author Report Posted December 5, 2018 I use stroke counting kanji with an error of ±1 strokes with Greys kanji cards Then if that doesn't work I use the Jisho website Yes I was doing the same thing. Maybe for me it was +-1 or 2. It's the little marks and "squares" that confused me. Quote
Blazeaglory Posted December 5, 2018 Author Report Posted December 5, 2018 So it's Sadakiyo then correct? Its supposedly Yokoya school. Either way I like it. I was looking at a very nice papered shishi set but the prices are so high right now Anyways. Thanks for the little "push". I've been meaning to attempt this for a while now! 2 Quote
SteveM Posted December 5, 2018 Report Posted December 5, 2018 Sadakiyo is normally 貞清, with 清 as the second kanji. The one on this fuchi is 精, which usually has the name-reading of Aki, so my inclination is to think this is Sadaaki. I pull my punches on this one because I can't find any other independent samples of a Sadaaki mei. 2 Quote
