TheGermanBastard Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 Probably this has been discussed before but let's see what longtime expirience member may have made. Doy ou think that Choji Oil remains the best choice for maintenance of a Japanese sword or do you think a cheap (non acid) Sewing Machine Oil is equal or even better? 1 Quote
b.hennick Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 One of our members did scientific tests on various oils. Use the search function to find the thread. I use choji oil and have been using it from the 1970s no problems ever for me. Quote
TheGermanBastard Posted September 20, 2018 Author Report Posted September 20, 2018 Hello Barry, it is difficult to run a search as it is limited to 4 characters minimum. So "oil" being only 3 characters causes an error. This was a reason why I opened a new topic. If you happen to know the link to the old topiic it would be much appreciated. Thank yoz 1 Quote
lonely panet Posted September 20, 2018 Report Posted September 20, 2018 this could be a can of worms my understanding is that choji being a natural veg/plant oil degrades over time once on the blade and becomes hard to clean off, and I have had "A" understanding that's slightly acidic if left on for long periods of time. (might what to fact check that one guys) with polished blades in shirasaya I used singer sewing machine oil, or pure mineral oil(for swords) very very sparingly, and cleaned the old oil off with 99.5 pure alcohol. you prob well know to avoid the powder ball of fine scratches hahahhaha I do remember there is a thread here over 3 pages long about this subject. very detailed Quote

TheGermanBastard Posted September 20, 2018 Author Report Posted September 20, 2018 Thank you very much. Rem Oil seems to be nice. I had not been aware of it. Quote
vajo Posted September 21, 2018 Report Posted September 21, 2018 After long search i use that now https://www.dictum.com/de/rostloeser-und-rostschuetzer-ehc/japanisches-kamelienoel-100-ml-713800 This is more liquid than pure camelia oil. You can put some drops from a good Choji Öl in it for the typical smell if you like. Quote
