Peter Churchman Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 I have come into possession of this wakazashi, inherited. I am politely asking for assistance on correct info on it. I was told this is made by Mihara Masaie saku. Made in 1377. That is all I know. I am unsure of its authenticity. The pics arent the greatest, did have oil on the blade too. The scabbard and handle appear made to fit for this blade. Can upload more pics if required. Additionally what is a relative worth of this blade if it is correct. Any help appreciated. Thanks Peter Churchman Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 永和 Eiwa San Nen (1377) is correct per the sayagaki. It's difficult to say much more from the current photos, but the activity I see including hitatsura like effects with tobiyaki, deep mune-yaki, etc it's not typical of Ko-Mihara. Unfortunately it appears that the blade has been subjected to a polishing wheel and all the geometry has been rounded off. Quote
Peter Churchman Posted September 15, 2018 Author Report Posted September 15, 2018 Such a quick response. Thanks. Yes, I had been looking at other swords and the lines cut (polished) are definite, the tip on this is rounded. My late pop was a jack of all trades, likely he polished it himself Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 15, 2018 Report Posted September 15, 2018 I'm terms of your question about value, the forging flaws (kitae-ware) and the damage to the sword's geometry by having been home polished substantially impact the market value. It is also likely that the sword cannot be restored (or that it would not make financial sense to do so) . 2 Quote
Peter Churchman Posted September 15, 2018 Author Report Posted September 15, 2018 OK. I will keep it as a memory of him. Thankyou for your professional advice. Quote
Jamie Posted October 1, 2018 Report Posted October 1, 2018 I personally think that suggesting that a trained polisher look at it in hand is possibly better advice than dismissing a sword from photos. Just my .02 1 Quote
Blazeaglory Posted October 2, 2018 Report Posted October 2, 2018 It looks like someone ground the Ji and shinogi down into the soft metal? Looks like it had some nice hada and temper lines going on. Can still see many nice patterns Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted October 3, 2018 Report Posted October 3, 2018 Dwain, the shingane may be softER, but it's not soft. The blade was made to look "pretty" by removing most of the surface defects...& value. Quote

Tom Darling Posted October 18, 2018 Report Posted October 18, 2018 You have a nice habaki and sword opinions are right on. Quote
