kiku Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Hallo to all, I bought a new tsuba and need some help again because of the signature. Please give me some little advise and then I can take a closer look at the Haynes index. Thank you Best regards Sebastian Quote
Brian Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Sebastian.. Just curious. These tsuba you have are quite nice pieces, and I am sure they are not cheap. So how do you spend a few $100 or more and not know what the signature says before you buy them? I would think if I was spending $600 or $1000 or whatever, I would want to know what signature is on it first? Just wondering Brian Quote
Rickisan Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Sebastian.. Congrads..that is beautiful tsuba....nice job! I have been dreaming a nice shakudo nanako! Any hints as to where you found this treasure? Rick Quote
kiku Posted March 26, 2008 Author Report Posted March 26, 2008 Hallo Brian and Rick, I bought it from a private collection and I had no cance to check anything because it was a very fast business and it was not "so " important because of the signatur because I like it so much and thats why I just bought it. Here is the front side, maybe someone cane tell me something more about the tsuba. Best regards Sebastian Quote

Ludolf Richter Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 I am wondering, why Haynes had missed this artist, who can be found in Henri L.Joly List of Names,Kakihan Reprint London 1963 with No.430: Tsunenao,Ichinomiya School. One of the 3 displayed Kao is exactely yours!Ludolf Quote
Brian Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 :D  Sorry...have to laugh. We advise Sebastian to go and buy Haynes which he does, and then the very next tsuba he buys is one of the few that isn't in there. Ironic! :D Good books to have though Sebastian. I wonder if there is anything on this school in the pdf documents I have listed in the General Discussion section? Field museum or Boston museum books? Brian Edit to add: http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.s ... ineNo=3390 Bonhams mentions on the page that in their sale (just passed) they have a namban tsuba by Ichinomiya Tsunenao. Worth looking through the catalog to find it. Could it be the same artist? Quote
Ludolf Richter Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 30 min.after my first reply: Haynes does have this artist under "Sadanaka" H07755,with all the infos.I found this out by looking in the (German) Shinkishi-Hara-book.There are 2 Mei examples in the Kinko Meikan on page 243 and 4 ex.,in the newer edition (Shin-san Kinko Meikan) on page 204.There is a remark in the Shinkishi Hara about a 5-Kanji-Mei with "Sadanaka-former Tsunenao"!That means that your nice Tsuba was probably made shortly after around 1725.Ludolf Quote
Brian Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Not sure if this is the same Tsunenao, but a bit of info I found on the net: Bonhams: A rare copper Namban tsuba is signed by Ichinomiya Tsunenao. It features dragons carved in relief with shishi and exotic birds. Designed with details in gold and enamel, it is engraved with European letters on the inner rim and dated 1759 (est. $4,000/4,500) http://www.mfa.org/collections/search_a ... e&id=22307 http://www.mfa.org/collections/search_a ... e&id=11460 (work looks the same) http://www.artfact.com/catalog/viewLot. ... e=ZNZ4G4wo Tsunenao is from Takatsuki in Settsu province. He was a student of Ichinomiya Nagatsune and his work is similar to that of his master. It is believed that he was responsible for some vicarious work of Nagatsune. http://www.truefork.org/Photography/Tsuba_1.php (Tsuba signed by Tsunenao) Brian Quote
kiku Posted March 27, 2008 Author Report Posted March 27, 2008 Hallo to all, I would like to say thank´s for the help again and I am really glad that you all help me doesnt matter if I ask stupid questions again. Best regards Sebastian Quote
zuiho Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 Way to go. Very nice. An art object bought because you like it and not because of who made it is the best to have. The signature is secondary to the quality of the piece. I am not a tsuba collector but I did buy one recently because I liked it so much. No signature and did not care. I have this same attitude with blades. William G, Quote
