i was looking at a Kinai that a friend has, (yes im working on getting it...lol)

 

to my eye the composition looks better when viewed on its side, just me?

That's because you are orienting on the head. Completely natural viewpoint, but, unmounted you'd be rotating and flipping it to view all its' glory. John
