skoppich Posted September 22, 2016 Report Posted September 22, 2016 I realize that this is an unusual request for this message board - I recently purchased a Meiji period bronze suiban which has an artist's seal on the bottom .... I would appreciate if anyone could provide a translation ... (Piers Dowding suggested that there is a slight chance that someone would be able to do so) ... Thanks in advance for any assistance .... Jean Posted September 22, 2016 Report Posted September 22, 2016 First name and an initial are mandatory on this Board for signing each post. Could you comply please, even if it is a one shot topic Quote
skoppich Posted September 22, 2016 Author Report Posted September 22, 2016 Sorry for missing that point .... Steve K. ..... Quote
Guido Posted September 22, 2016 Report Posted September 22, 2016 I cropped the seal and rotated it to the right orientation - I think ... Seal script, the lower left character could be 山 (yama/san). Quote
Brian Posted September 22, 2016 Report Posted September 22, 2016 All I could add to Guido's helpful post is to try and play with the contrast and sizer a bit. Not sure this helps at all.. Edit to add..nope, I think his is clearer. Quote
Guido Posted September 22, 2016 Report Posted September 22, 2016 Funny, on my computer the arrow I added shows up, on my tablet it shows to the right ...? Quote
Gordon Sanders Posted September 23, 2016 Report Posted September 23, 2016 I mucked about it with instagram filters and hope it helps Quote
SteveM Posted September 23, 2016 Report Posted September 23, 2016 Looks like 匠, but in reverse. Quote
k morita Posted September 23, 2016 Report Posted September 23, 2016 Hi, skoppich,I have known you posted this Suiban on Asian art forums. I believe the stamp says Jōzan (丈山). 1 Quote
skoppich Posted September 23, 2016 Author Report Posted September 23, 2016 To all participants in this topic: Thanks so much for your assistance! .... Very quick work done on a topic unrelated to your usual expertise .... I will begin to do some research on Jozan (special thanks to Mr. Morita!) - if this is a familiar name to you, please let me know .... Steve K. 1 Quote
