Muromachi Mirror

If you want to study the techniques that were applied on kagamishi tsuba, here is your chance. Charming Muromachi period mirror decorated with four cherry blossoms. These seem to have been stamped into the mould (same stamp was used for all) before the mirror was cast.

The mirror has an intact coating of old black lacquer. There are remnants of lacquer on the rim, too. Pretty amazing that this has survived.

I have attached also  pics of two kagamishi tsuba. One is from Sasano's book, the other one from my collection. You can compare the work, but neither of them is included in this sale  ;)

8cm in diameter, 3 mm at rim, 2mm plate thickness

SOLD

Hi Stephen, no, I was thoroughly scolded for suggesting the same thing once :rotfl:   I did go ahead and buy a very cheap Chinese mirror with the intent of doing just what you suggest, but got cold feet after considering the mug that might be looking back at me.

Do we think it was this surface that was polished bright, or an original coating that was reflective (silver etc?) that has worn off over time?
