Unusual Stamp

Found this on another forum and thought I'd see if anyone recognizes the stamp before I post it to the "Stamp" thread.

Hi Bruce,

 

I've not seen that before. Certainly looks deliberately struck as opposed to some of the rust pits and indentations that get mistaken for stamps. I had a look through the books that show a variety of military stamps and couldn't find anything similar.

Look at the tsuba, Seppa, and menuki - as well as the lines and yasurime on the nakago. All questionable to say the least. Any pics of the sword?

 

Edit to add: pics of the saya and tsuka would be helpful too.

just another oddity, hope we dont try to make something grand out of the thing, #forgedbyJesuitpriest hence the cross stamp.

I don't know what it is but if this was a nihonto at the origin, it has been very badly tampered with. The nakago is awful, have alook at the tsuba ana.... Some remaining yasurime makes me think of a showato which has been machi okuri and the habaki moved up. But without anymore pictures no one can say what it is: fake or real. Obviously, the guy who posted it did not know what pictures to attach..

OK ive been nice ...its a POS ...made up stamp to be like A acceptance stamp, Chinese crap....Damn!

Thanks to all for the inputs! I'll pass them along to the owner. Seems like the really good gunto are slowly being collected and taken out of circulation, not all of course. But it seems the odd-balls are popping up more now.

odd ball is a term that is miss-leading, IMHO is worth avoiding due it being of almost rubbish quality.
