loiner1965 Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 saw this advertised and quite fancied it even though i think its oil quenched. i may be wrong but i had to make a quick decision on wether to buy or not just by seeing some pics....hoping my metal saya i have fits lol any info on pics be most welcomed Quote
Brian Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Good example of an amateur polish. This guy should stay away from swords. Buffed bright blade, rounded lines, and an etched hamon. Can't see if it is going to be water or oil quenched. I do think it has a chance of being traditionally made. But you have to undo that polish to find out. Might be Showato. I assume it was cheap. It's real at least. Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 ...you shall not. Unless you already have and in that case apparently you shall. Quote
loiner1965 Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 it was very cheap brian......in fact a steal. i couldnt see any dark peaks in the hamon to indicate oil quenched and i did think of acid etching but thought it turned the hamon more milky and slurry looking. no idications on advert to say of any arsenal stamps and no time to ask etc.....so i took the plunge and see what happens lol Quote
loiner1965 Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 agree brian that people should leave the polishing to the professionels. joe.....you totally baffled me but thats not hard to do nowadays Quote
Alex A Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Hello Steve, pity about the saya, hows your metal work skills? Quote

loiner1965 Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 true i can make a fast buck eerrrr pound but i always seem to hoard them etc....... Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 I was being sarcastic "Answering" the subject line of the thread. I meant that I would pass on it personally if you were looking for a collector piece - But it sounded like you already made the move, making my response moot. My sense of humor is much like my personality; dry, vague, and relatively pointless. To Stephen's point, you may be able to make a buck on it, but I didn't read that as your objective in your OP. He is also dead-on with marketing to the militaria fans. With very few exceptions, mumei gendaito is not very quickly sold - especially these days. There is a really nice one that Sal has for sale (http://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/18477-polished-gendaito-for-sale/) at a very fair price and hasn't been getting a ton of attention. Most Nihonto (not militaria) collectors focusing on gendaito are looking for signed and dated work by well known smiths in good polish (since a professional polish for most run of the mill gendai work is not cost effective). This sword is none of those things - making it far more appropriate for militaria collectors looking for a shingunto. BTW - Good luck on the saya. Those are made specifically for the sword it is originally attached to. More often than not, others will not fit, as again - they are custom made since the sword dimension will vary from sword to sword. 1 Quote
loiner1965 Posted January 14, 2016 Author Report Posted January 14, 2016 Many thanks . I have a couple of gendaitos....kanetoshi and akinori etc and a kanemune . Also have a tired and abused old naga mitsu tanto which should have gone to the scrap yard years ago but I like to rehome them for what they were and not as they are now. Same as my naginata by kiyomitsu which developed a large umegame when polished but again I still own it. Not into the value or making money on the swords but I just like the history and having them around if that makes sense 2 Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 I'd be interested in seeing the Akinori. He made some good stuff! Quote
SAS Posted January 14, 2016 Report Posted January 14, 2016 Nitric or maybe sulfuric acid would be my guess, militaria piece that shows a hard life Quote
loiner1965 Posted January 15, 2016 Author Report Posted January 15, 2016 Joe....couple of years ago I started a thread on here about the gendaito katana by akinori tanaka and Chris , John and k morita San helped me tremendously on it but I cannot seem to be able to locate the pics etc. Hope it's the same smith you are wanting to see....I shall take more pics of it over the weekend for you. Very light in hand and feels quite comfortable if that makes sense Quote
loiner1965 Posted January 21, 2016 Author Report Posted January 21, 2016 its arrived and its a wakizashinice wavy and complete hamon and nice turn back in the kissiki.to my eyes its not been acid etched as i lightly uchiko it and its looks ok.now good or bad lol.......i can see grain in certain light and under a magnifying glass.near the habaki i thought i could see rub throughs but i am not sure so i measured it and its around 5.5mm thick.the grain i can see is ayasugi or o-mokume but i would say the former is favourite.not too fussed either way or if its tired as it looks pleasing to my eyes.ohh.......its still sharpedit...noticed in certain light that they is shadows above the hamon like tear drops towards the shinogi etc....seen this before on blades but i cannot find a pic or a name to it.opologies for any confusion 2nd edit.....think its called Midare-utsuri i can see 1 Quote
