The blade is signed "Shinano koku Ueda ju Minamoto Tomomaro saku kore 信濃国上田住源友麿作之", dated "Koki Nisen roppyakusan-nen San-gatsu Hi 皇紀二千六百三年三月日 (a day, March. 1943), Orito Shohei haito 折戸昌平佩刀 (ordered by Orita Shohei)", shinogi-zukuri shape, brfore WWll time period made blade. Tomomaro's real name is Orihata Tatsuo, was born in Ueda city, Nagano prefecture on 1905, studied swors making under Kasama Shigetsugu, listed in John Slough's book page 17 and rated 1.5 Million yen. Tomomaro died on Oct 9, 1950. The blade is traditional hand forged, in full polish, no rust, no stain and in mint condition. The temper line is wavy gunome with saka-choji temper pattern throughout the blade and has deep o-maru temper at the point. The forging grain is tight itame-hada and no forging flaws at all. There is no bend, no crack and cutting edge is sharp. The scabbard is heavy metal scabbard, shows tiny lacquer loss but no dent, no bend and in good condition. The handle is tight fit, tsuka-ito wrapping shows minor cut but is no loose in good condition. Lock mechanism works fine. It measures 27+3/4" tip to the guard, 26+3/4" cutting edge, 1+1/4" width, 7 mm thickness at the notch and 39+3/4" in mountings.
