Hello,

I have a mei of a naginata that I may want to acquire. The seller claims that the mei reads 'Kurume no ju Yoshitsugu' but it is in gyoshi and hard to read for me. I am only able to read 'Kurume X X X Minamoto Yoshi X'. Can anybody help with the correct may and if there has been a relation to Suishinshi Masahide. The seller also claims that this Yoshitsugu was a student of Suishinshi Masahide but I was not able to find antyhing in my reference books abouit a relationship.

Thanks

Stephan

Patrick,

Many thanks for your quick reply. I had checked in my own Hawley's yesterday evening but must have been blind. I am in the office and don't have my books at hand, but will see today evening.

There is an example to be found in

ART AND THE SWORD

The Bulletin of the Japanese Sword Society of the United States

1991-Volume Four

page 20/21

The Mei is nearly identical with yours (genuine!) and has a dating:"A day in August of the 4th year of Bunka" (1807).According to the author,Kentaro Yoshikawa,"The Yoshitsugu who made this blade is a swordsmith of the Yoshimasa school and a student of Suishinshi Masahide, who moved from Chikuzen to Kuruma around Kyowa (1801)".Ludolf

Ludolph-

April Fool's Day joke? To me the reference mei and the photo signature look _exactly_ the same. Are the reference mei and photograph the same blade or is there some natural variation I am missing?

I think Brian just copied the picture over, made it grayscale, upped the contrast, reduced its size a bit and reposted it so that it is easier to see the mei.

But thats how i understood it anyways :)

Curran,

It is probably me who needs the dunce cap for not explaining more clearly what I had done. I thought it easier to read the mei if the contrast was enhanced a bit and it fitted on the page without scrolling.

Ludolf..nice work. I think those are clearly a great match, as good as you can ask for.
