murphda2 Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Could anyone possibly assist me by directing me to where I may be able to fid information about a smith by the name of "Ido Hidetoshi"? I believe his work was prior to and leading up to WWII. My first blade I purchased (about 9 years ago) is a Gunto mounted wakizashi which is signed by this name. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you Murph Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 Not much I could find, Murph. But there's a brief bit on him at http://www.japanesesword.com/Images/Swo ... ndaito.htm Quote
Ludolf Richter Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 There is no Hidetoshi to be found in the 20th century besides Kanesaki Hidetoshi, born in 1944 (Tokuno p.522,Gendai Token Meikan p.132).Under "XIV Other" Chris Bowen mentions a Hidetoshi without further data, who was working at Tokyo.See the link below.Ludolf http://www.geocities.com/alchemyst/tokyosmi.htm Quote
Nobody Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 Ido Hidetoshi (井戸秀俊) is listed on the following table as both Chuge-saku and Ge-saku ranks. http://home.earthlink.net/~ttstein/tosho.htm Quote
murphda2 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Report Posted August 24, 2007 I greatly appreciate the information which everyone has provided thus far. Any further information which could be provided would be equally appreciated. The photos in the link provided by "Ken-Hawaii" are of a blade with very similar charecteristics to my blade (ie. geometry of blade and file markings). The hamon of my wakizashi seems to have more activity. Unfortunately, though I have been an admirer of Japanese blades for many years, saying that my knowledge was "lacking" would be an understatement. Until recently, I have not had the means to study, though my means are still quite lacking..... the strength of my desire to learn has grown. Thank you for your assistance. When I have the opportunity, I will try to figure out how to post photos of my blade. Murph Quote
murphda2 Posted August 24, 2007 Author Report Posted August 24, 2007 Here is a photo of my wakizashi. Quote
Brian Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Murph, Can you post a pic of the mei and nakago? True wakizashi Shin Gunto are pretty scarce, and are called "pilot's wakizashi" usually. However those I have seen came with proper proportion metal saya. Yours looks like a wakizashi taken to war that was made before that, and it would be interesting to see if this was made long before the war, or otherwise. Most of the wakizashi we see in Gunto mounts are civilian swords taken to war, and I haven't seen one yet that was machine made. Interesting sword. Brian Quote

Mark Posted August 26, 2007 Report Posted August 26, 2007 I notced Item number: 130147435186, the mei looks like Hidetoshi, not sure if it is the same maker, but if it is, and if you are looking for a katana maybe it is an option Quote
