It is date. Note the kanji for 1000, sen 千 100, hyaku 百 and six, roku 六 and first month, shogatsu 正月 and lucky day, kichijitsu 吉日 Then remember that the first year of Emperor Jimmu was 660 so subtract 659 from the total to get the year. John

Me too with George.

I surmise that mei is Tanaka Akinori (田中 昭徳) maybe.

Me too gentlemen....I saw the pics and description online and thought this is something a bit better than normal....it was listed as being made in tamahagne but alas no pic of the other side.

Sometimes you have to grab the bull by the horns and buy on impulse which in this hobby can be expensive and disappointing.

What threw me off was kanji not in the usual chippy style and dated 1940 .

The rustless tang would point to 1940 and I be honest I thought they misread the date as it was listed as an uchigatana and one handed sword....

Will ring up and inquire as curiosity does get the better of me .

Sorry,I have mistyped this swordsmith's family name.

"Nakata" is correct, Not "Tanaka".

中 田 昭 徳
