Hello,

I saw this tanto on Ebay, but I guess it is gimei (even the Hideaki signs look o.k.?!).

As I know Hideaki changed his name to Toshihide because Crown Price Akihito was born 1933..... This tanto is dated June 1934. So the question is, whan exactly he changed his name? I guess before June 1934. The other point is that from my point the shape of the Nakago and the workmanship seems not to be Toshihide level.

By the way, I have no intention to buy this blade!

Hi,

The seller's description,[The blade was made on the 9th of June of the 8th year of Showa (1934)] is wrong.

Showa 8th year is 1933, not 1934.(The date on the tang cannot be seen.)

Toshihide mei started from on January 1934.

It seems I was wrong with my assumption :? The Tanto has been sold in the meantime!!

I wonder if somebody from the NMB-members bought it... :lipssealed:

Plenty of lurkers here....beware ;)

I bought it. It is a classic mamori-gatana made for a women...couldn't resist at that price.

I have no doubt the signature is good. I have seen a very suspect Hideaki Mikasa tanto recently but this one is fine....

By the way, the title of the thread should read Hideaki, not Akihide....

Yes, It was nice tanto.

Clasic Mamori-gatana.

Suguha hamon for straight steady life (not up and down) and probably Yakizume boshi for not turn back (divorce) after married.

and Signature is good.

There is some corrosion on the nakago that hopefully can be taken care of, but otherwise, sweet....

Here is an almost identical one made a few years earlier. Notice it has the same habaki:

Also, here is a tip to identify Horii Hideaki/Toshihide blades: he always puts a deep file cut across the nakago mune at an angle like in the photo...

Christ how will you remove the rust?

Use a bone to take off any flaky bits if any?

Rub carefully the area with oil and bone ?

I've seen blade soaked in choji oil being use to lift rust.

BTW useful bits of Toshihide key features from Chris.

Zounds! that darned Scarlet Pimpernel beats me at every turn!

Another scoop Chris...I envy you. Hideaki for $870...nice.

Maybe I should start snooping on ebay more...

Regards (loaded with envy)

I will soak the nakago in oil for a few weeks then use a piece of bone to gently remove the red rust. Most of it should come off easily.

These last two swords are the first I have bought from ebay in at least 10 years....Funny how there were two within a few days of each other. I have seen several others that tempted me but I promised myself I wouldn't buy anything until I have finished my house. Sometimes rules are meant to be broken... :glee:

Study study study and they will pop out at you....
