bmoore1322 Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Okay, I'm serious about buying this sword, everyone keeps saying that I need to buy a very high quality sword, and this is made by a very famous sword smith, I will be calling them om Monday to ask about it, and see what his bottom dollar would be. What do you all think about it, I absolutely love it, and I would be so honored to be able to own such a great sword as this one is. I don't think there could possibly be a better sword anywhere as of right now. Thanks Brian eBay link ; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Samura ... 35bf9a3ac9 Quote
Pete Klein Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 My next step would be to apply it for Shinsa but I can promise you once that is done we won't be talking about the same price. If for whatever reason it passes as Gimei, I am sure a forge of this quality will pass Shinsa under Mumei Tokubetsu or higher status. ROFLMAO!!! Quote
Thierry BERNARD Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Brian you ask a lot of questions, but you do not hear any answers!! friendly Quote
Brian Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 It's not a Kiyomaru. If it was, it would be for sale for over $200K! If you are spending anywhere over $10K on a sword, you had better make sure it comes with papers, otherwise you are are going to be throwing away a lot of money. It is a nice blade though, in very nice polish. But not a $20K sword. If you want to spend over $20K..we can no doubt point you to LOTS of papered swords that are better. Not sure what the papers say, but this one appears to be a better deal: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Japanese-Samura ... 35bf4817b0 Brian Quote

chrstphr Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 If this sword was so awesome and worth $27,000. Then why didnt the guy have it submitted to shinsa while still in Japan where he bought it? Why didnt the Japanese owner have it submitted for shinsa before selling it to this seller? These are red flags to me. If its real and so awesome, wouldnt one of those guys submit it and then be able to get more money for selling it with papers and a judgement??? This may be a nice sword, but if gimei, then its just an average gimei sword and i doubt it will get tokubetsu hozon or any of the like. It would already have the papers if it were that high a quality. I usually dont believe anything a seller posts on ebay about unpapered swords. In my humble opinion. Chris Quote
drdata Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Buy the sword, not the story. I shinsa with nthk in the states only costs a few hundred dollars, and this can be done with an agent. Ask yourself. If you owned a nihonto store, and believed this is what it is claimed to be, would you not get the paper so you could in turn ask a price that is, apparently, going to be an order of magnitude higher? AFAIK, gimei will not "pass", period. The signature would need to be removed, the nakago repatinated, and then resubmitted as mumei. I am not 100% but believe later period blades should all be signed, and dated, so the mumei status could present serious issues. That said, does seem a nice blade. You have enviably deep pockets, my friend. At this level of pricing I would stay well clear of ebay. The risk/reward factor for evilbay is the diamond in the rough, not the diamond that has "just not been certified yet". Cheers Quote
Ray Singer Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 eBay is the worst, most dangerous place to use as your hunting ground until you have studied more. You're looking at an unauthenticated sword that is priced above the level of many fine Juyo token daito you can see online. I don't think there could possibly be a better sword anywhere as of right now. Quote
Brian Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 LOL @ Ted! Classic, and a very good example. So it's unanimous. Save your money...give a budget, and I'm sure the forum can find you a great deal. You have a network second to none here. The catchphrase "slow down kimosabe" comes to mind Brian Quote
bmoore1322 Posted September 8, 2012 Author Report Posted September 8, 2012 Okay, thank you, now I know, this is why I come to this forum, so many knowledgeable people, the search continues. Brian Quote
bmoore1322 Posted September 8, 2012 Author Report Posted September 8, 2012 Okay, how about this one, not on ebay, and looks really good, and has papers with it. I really like this style of jabara maki ito wrapping. I see nothing wrong with sword, other then it does not belong to me as it is owned by Bob Benson, and I have bought a previous sword from him in the past. Brian Posted September 8, 2012 Report Posted September 8, 2012 Awesome sword. An example of what a well done horimono looks like, in great polish, very nice fittings...everything great. My only hesitation is that if you are going to be dropping $15K...you might want to look for a katana instead of a waki, and a more sought after school. For under $20K, you can find a Juyo blade if you search hard. Examples: http://www.aoi-art.com/sword/sale/main.html Brian Quote
bmoore1322 Posted September 8, 2012 Author Report Posted September 8, 2012 On the phone with Mr. Benson right now, and seeing what he can get for me, as that sword just sold recently, but he does have others, and will be sending me some pics and info. Will let you know as I get the info. Brian Quote

almeister Posted September 9, 2012 Report Posted September 9, 2012 A Perspective : (Based on katana/in koshirae/resale value) $30k = (1) Juyo (everthing perfect - however in times of resale - prices seem to hover around the same area - & you know the drill if you had to sale it in an emergency) (2) 3 x katanas in reasonable - good koshirae/full polish/certified ( eg - ranging from $8k - $12k each . At the moment it's a buyers market out there with some good bargains /? resale at the moment . Great enjoyment to have this # & quality of blades to study ) (3) 10 -12 katanas - Out of polish & flaws/poor - medium koshirae/no certification or guarentee on anything (possible to make a few bob & to also lose a few bob in times of sale - with the chance of some never selling or having a treasure hidden amongst it somewhere ) I know which way I'd go .... anyway - someone just pinched me & woke me up , it was nice while it lasted ! Cheers , Alan Quote
