In my opinion only oiling living rust spots just helps break further already loosen rust crumbs. In my case area with black dots changes to big chunk of rust in just 3 months. Adding more photos of other „bad actors”
-
And to showcase what baking soda can do with nasty fingerprint at mune I’m adding this photo. Please notice you can clearly see that area wasn’t scratched or grinded. It’s only went from red to white/gray with spots of healthy steal.

So how this spot looks now after coating of baking soda mixed with choij? Of course coating in this particular case needed to cover wider area then only rusted.
-
So for now original photo of worst spot coming from purchase offer and again one of photos above to show what was going on with blade 3 months after purchase. You can clearly see that rust was hiden dipper then just spot on ha and started to appear at wide area.
-
So After a full year of choji I aproached blade wanting to neutralize and clean all rust. It's not attempt to DIY polish but to protect blade from further corroding. While removing old oil I barely used any uchiko as polish was fresh.

Fully Mounted Early Shinto Katana in Good Polish
Rawa replied to ChrisW's topic in Swords and Edged Weapons
Oh I didn’t mean „polishing”! Simply put some to kill rust, I don’t want to keep this thread here. I’m finishing pumping akihide after one year of seasoning. Go for this blade! If it had even green papers I would be doing it myself. But 23% vat for me. -
Fully Mounted Early Shinto Katana in Good Polish

Really fine sword. Tsuba with mon rest of koshirae also great. With this price even as gendaito it’s great deal. Rust will give up after baking soda with choji. -
Some info and swords at site needs to be updated. Please wait with offers until owner get in touch himself.
-
this piece had leather strap threaded through tsuba ana, probably to keep blade sheathed.
-
I still would go for civilian sword repurposed for military service. Leather cover over normal wooden saya and typical hanger added. Identical as example at ohmura.
-
Show us nakago. It looks now as gunzoku or similar http://ohmura-study.net/728.html
-
Your koshirae is great in this price, tsuka is fully wrapped in samegawa and I don’t see any old plugged mekugi ana. Maybe saya should be wider? But yeah I’m asking for probable number becouse it could be same serie so I would know how jihada of mine probably looks :]

Thank you! Look at mei. Have You ever wonder why „mura” character isn’t chiseled exactly on nakago ridge? Look on Slough’s book example. You provided example „inbetween” tachi niji mei with rounded nakago jiri. for comparison: https://www.militaria.co.za/nmb/topic/53564-gunto-with-long-chounsai-emura-mei/page/2/#findComment-564106 who polished yours?
-
@MidareObserver Faustus check please if you have any marks near nakago jiri, You have bohi and so it happens that bohi and emura equals numbers so you should have number 6. It would prove that horimono and mei was made by same separate specialiazed group. Compare habaki

@MidareObserver Thank You! Knowledge is free, don't mind dumping here anything related to Emura. I'm adding hamon picture. Gunome midare and this nakago jiri both somehing new. Another one with bohi. "Made during wartime, and bearing a long signature, it is an especially carefully crafted sword." :D maybe it's just translation or grammar but still sounds suspicious reading alone. It's probably made as individual order and thats it, but no mentions about it on nakago... https://www.japaneseswordindex.com/emura.htm check please signature example F For now Yes it's Gunome midare and this signature with straight nakago jiri, so we can't proof that particular mei was connected to particular finish or hamon.

So this entire offer ended.
