    Myochin Munenao

Hmm, based on the signature the Munenao from “嘉永” (1848-1853) comes to mind…..(without warranty!). Well, no pics, no further info!
  2. Dobrée has nice kanji tables 👍
  3. Hi Bruce, Markus listed cursive variants of kanji in his “Nihonto Compendium”! Quite helpful some times….
  4. Sometimes one can’t see the forest through the trees….
  5. A shot in the dark as a first try: “如(麟)斉黯意” The kanji in brackets might be a variant…can’t make out sense for the time being.

    Kura and Abumi

  9. Jōi (乗意) 1701-1761 – Edo – student of Nara Toshinaga (寿永) – gō Issan (一蝅), Issandō (一蝅堂) – also Nagaharu (永春)
  10. “他ニ不可渡之 - Do not hand this over to others”.…..failed! Sry, couldn’t resist 😔
  11. Hmm, “後藤利影試之” if I’m not wrong?? One of the Gotō guys I guess… I have some difficulties to read the name...Toshikage??
  12. Not sure if I got your question right, Stephen… The first photo date is Taishō 3 = 1914!
  13. Yes David, it’s an armor chest and called yoroi-bitsu. The “helmet” is an hira-jingasa, as Francois already mentioned.
  14. As Ray said “日本鍛冶宗匠” (whereby soushou means master/teacher)!
  15. It starts with “日本”, Bruce 😉
  16. The mon is called “丸に剣花菱” (Maru ni ken hanabishi) and related to some more families than recorded above….

    Myochin Munenao

Hi and welcome Mark! The mei actually reads “明珍紀宗直” (Myōchin ki Munenao). The fact that the smith used “紀” in his signature suggests that he was not related to the Kaga Kojima guy! But to be sure, we need a picture of the helmet in question!
  18. Guess that’s a question for our moderators…Brian or Jean or….
  19. Another pronunciation is “Katsura Katsuaki”…
  20. Upper row “脇指 無銘” (wakizashi mumei).
  21. Yes of course, Moriyama San (just noticed the little stroke). So Maruyama….Thanks for the correction!
  22. Hi Hamfish, your second sword is “濃州関伊佐地兼弘作之” (Isaji Kanehiro)….followed by “廣光” (Hiromitsu) as the third! Addendum: First tag ends with “小林中尉” (Kobayashi, first lieutenant)…several readings for the name are possible! Above right seems to read “九山部隊” (Kuyama unit/corps/force…). Not sure about the reading in brackets “私物軍刀” (privat owned guntō)?
  23. I had “魯” for the second left, Piers??
  24. One of these stories a collector is dreaming of....thanks for sharing! Excytingly told
  25. Nengo says 4th year Genkō, third month. That means 1334. Very suspicious….
