From memory the closest blade I came across in comparison to this one was a Go blade that I found here on NMB. Now I cant find the link, anyhow one has to be a realist to. I have not seen this thick of ara-nie mistiness on a Tametsugu blade. Uchinoke would point towards Yamato? I will read up Personally I dont think the kissaki has been to overly changed, but I also reacted when it came back. But this is a surviving battle blade so it is realistic that it has been through a "few" polishing stages. Probably you can do it now, but who would dare to test when a new Habaki is 500-700 usd for a simple design. You can 3d print in plastic, brass, silver, gold etc.. I made a custom tsuba holder where I 3D printed a perfect fit for nagako-ana in combination of kogai and kozuka-ana. Easiest is to take a photo of example a tsuba, or for this purpose "a blade" using an existing Habaki or wrap a thin brass sheet around the blade for making a template. Then the photo of the template can be turned into a 3d model by online tools. Use example tinkercad (online, free) to elongate the model. Then print out...

Thank you for all the comments! For the kissaki and boshi, I am unsure if the kissaki has been repaired (at least not now), and there were no special comments from the togishi regarding this matter. Hard to photograph. My light setup is not the best. Tametsugu has come up. Right now, my head is spinning in all directions. I am wondering what this part of hamon is called, I have not seen something like this dark before? It is surely set apart from the rest. h The wind is chasing the nie and dark (chikei?) in the hada. Masame hada? - lose grain Crazy love

Hi and Merry Christmas to all, For me one of the more interesting pieces that got back to me this year is this interesting blade with 70 cm nagasa, and shallow sori. Before the restoration, the blade had a nanbokucho bizen feel to it with utsuri, ko-itame, midare-based hamon with nie and some chikei. After the polish the blade show now numerous magic hataraki that points toward soshu-den. I would describe the hamon, to be have been painted with a thick brush, a mist of ara-nie that swirls in the wind. I appoligize to many photos. I would appreciate everyone thoughts on this blade, and it will be interesting what a future shinsa will attribute it to. I appoligize to many photos. Mostly itame hada, with some mokume and a bit of masame (I may be wrong) closer to the nagako. Utsuri is very destinct. There is dark streaks in the metal, that follows the grain. General overview photos. Kissaki - Boshi is hard to photograph - it changes depending on the light and angle. Possible ichimai-bōshi. How common is it with this type of hada from one of the three mitsu's? Would think mokume was more common but this is more dense? Nie-deki maybe?

A big thank you to Jean for organizing and teaching the session on tsuba forging. I learned a great deal, as one always does when working hands on. Herrstein was a charming little medieval town, with a cozy cafe serving rustic food. I wish I had more time to explore, but the forge kept calling me in. It was also a pleasant surprise to meet colleagues from a similar scientific field. My tsuba still needs some filing and a bit more hammering of the rim before it is finished. The experience was great!

Agree, please continue with the eye candy and debate. Scientific debates can be rough sometimes, I remember a conference in Glasgow many years ago and a shouting match between the speaker and a colleague in the audience. The remarkable thing was that the colleague was upset that the speaker had changed his stand point in a matter in more favor to his own theory. "NOW YOU CHANGE YOUR MIND, LET ME TELL YOU" and so it went for a while. I almost thought they would swing fists at each other for a while.

Sorry, if I hijack the thread. I thought dark area was the utsuri... Reading Marcus Sesko thought on utsuri he has a picture calling the "dark area" antai. The utsuri starts above the antai. I include also a photo of one of my blades. Is this correct?

Could be in the production process (clay/tempering). Significance is that it has no use as a tool or weapon, it has lost its purpose (dead).

Hard to say from the photos but it looks like that the hamon goes out from the blade. I think it is called Nioi-gire and is considered a major flaw.

Is the hamon running out of the blade? I would go for a papered blade, these type of blades is for experts to know if to buy or not.

I would ask the seller I know too little of the subtle aspects of what makes a blade this and that price. Others probably are much better than me to advise on price. -B update. I asked about an Omiya katana that was on Aoi a time ago. There are some examples of different Omiya blades in the thread, which can give a bit of perspective on the different levels. Personally, Without knowledge, this is a bit of a minefield (but what area of antiques and art isn't?). When starting, the problem is knowing my taste, what I like, what to look for, and what area of interest. Will I buy to learn from the item and then sell it to move forward or to buy and keep it? Any price range is hard. Is it Bizen that you are looking for? I like this one... It is not a katana, but from a known/famous smith. Nice time period, and you have the other oei smith to collect also.
