  1. Chris - great comment nailed my thoughts exactly! Seems like 31 so far 7 X1 + 6 X2 + 4X 3(or more) Great start - only 25 submissions.
  2. Translating books has not in the past been much of a money maker for those who do the work. We need them and their efforts to advance our learning. Here is a tangible way to support Markus and to help those that cannot afford the current offering get a very uabale set. I want to thank ADrian at his efforts on our behalf. As a Director of the JSSUS I see a lot of people who work for the benefit of others without much benefit for themselves. All our executives do their jobs unpaid. Brian certainly is not doing this for the money. He doesn't make any. At ten cents an hours we would owe him a small fortune. I hope to see this effort come to fruition and want to thank Markus the Author, Adrian the "publisher" and Brian the "escrow agent"...We need buyers not detractors.
  3. A similar approach is to take a tsuba, lay it on a surface and place a tsuka on the seppa dai. The view "as mounted" is often better than just the tsuba. It shows what the tsubashi wanted people to see when the tsuba was worn. Some like to give the tsuba a 1/4 turn to clockwise to show how the tauba looks during the draw. There is a good article in a KTK catalogue on mon that refers to the rotation
  4. If this falls short of the 100 copies but is close perhaps some (like me) would buy a second (or more) copies to make this feasable. These will go up in value over time. That would carry the project over the top. Perhaps Markus would want some copies (at cost) for himself. Another thought is that Markus could offer signed copies at a premium.
  5. Also found in Rokusho #28 along with a second tsuba. It is quite impressive when the detail is shown in the magasine. I have been going over the two Rokusho issues on tsuba focussing on the plate rather than the design. We tend to see forest and not trees. The plates on some of the pieces in these two (28 and 34) issues are great.
  6. I would like to be the first to go on the list of buyers of such a book. If there will only be 25 copies I would buy two. Some us are book people who like to actually hold the book and thumb the pages. I did buy some of Markus's digital editions but I find that I would rather read or reread physical books than use the digital ones. EDITED Below My error I do want the hard copy book when available. I do not want the digital edition. I would still buy two copies of the hard copy book. I would be happier with a high quality print copy than a lower quality (cheaper) book. I tend to use my books and reread them when i can. (Recently retired and more reading in the future. :D )
  7. I have been burned by him twice. One pair of menuki were new. I emailed and finally got permission to return them. "They never arrived". Second time a yari turned out to be new as well. If I see his name on an item I do not read further.
  8. Our local dollar store sells a good desicant called Damp trap. It works well in my safe. I replace it about every 3-4 months.
  9. Thanks for the input. Could this smith be of the Ichijyo School?
  10. There is a tsuba for sale that I am interested in. Please tell me the smith's name and School? The first character is ichi or kazu (probably ichi_
  11. I have a Bungo sword that received 78 points at a NTHK shinsa. It is indeed a good blade. I do not know why they are not appreciated as much as they should be.
  12. I am working with photos that someone sent me rather than my own photos. Here is a second attempt. I hope that these are better. It looks more like Yasu to me...
  13. Yasumitsu was my first choice followed by Nagamitsu then doubt. I'm still in doubt. Thanks,
  14. Help would be appreciated. This is a two character mei.
  15. Hello: We (John Wee Tom, Chris Leung and I) started to work on an article for the JSSUS Newsletter. If everything lines up we will have it ready for the next issue. Gentle reminder to renew your JSSUS membership. :D
  16. We had a very successful meeting at the Toronto Sword study group (J.C.C.C. Token Kai). Our speak John Wee Tom brought three great kawari kabuto with mempo to our meeting to support his presentation. This was supplimented by kabuto brought in by our members. We had an additional 12 kabuto brought in by members who in turn discussed their pieces. The speaker had an amazing Myochin kabuto that was signed with a Myochin signed mempo and a Myochin signed meadate. All of great quality. The link below will lead to some photos to some photos I took at the meeting. https://picasaweb.google.com/b.hennick/ ... cmEy6XPWQ# Enjoy!
  17. Mark Jones wrote to tell me that I could mention that I bought the sword from him. He had about thirty swords on his table. Several caught my eye and got a second look. The sword I bought got a third look and I bought it. The blade was very reasonable asking was just under $500. I have been collecting over forty years and study swords. Many looked and dismissed the piece. The person who is handling the restoration for me asked where I found it and said that he would have bought it in a flash. He then showed me a similar blade that he bought. The polish was terrible but the blade was very good - a real potential juyo after polish. We will see after restoration. Bottom line study, handle blades and you too may find a treasure. Regards, Barry Hennick
  18. Bill worked very hard to run this show.He tried some innovative new things .He does deserve credit for what he did. Yes there were problems but all first ventures have problems. I hope that with continued support Bill will do this again and take suggestions to heart. Regards, Barry Hennick P.S. I found a treasure at the show.
  19. I have used the services of a free site called survey monkey. It is easy to use.
  20. Hi Pete I started a thread like that and ended up with an iron habaki. They are indeed rare. If you can add some photos I would appreciate it. I like Hizen to - any info would also be appreciated.
  21. Leather cpr is a great product to both clean and soften leather. It is available on eBay and from the manufacturer. I bought and used a small container and then went for the large size.
  22. Weight varies with too many factors to be a significant consideration. Length, width, point size, polishes, suriage vs ubu and so on. Having said that some smiths do make more substantial blades. Tadakuni the Hizen smith made "heavier" blades than all the other Hizen smiths that I have seen. There is a wakizashi by him that I own that was written up in the JSSUS Newsletter that mentions that this blade is heavier than most katana. The katana I have by him is heavier still.
  23. Hi JOhn: I switched to IE and saw the download button - actually it downloaded a toolbar I did not want and then wanted to change my homepage, search engine etc. Still no PDF file. I went through the process several times only to get the same crap. Is there an easy place to get the PDF like yousendit?
