  1. Good shots, Bushu ju Masakata, Edo......see how easy that was! -S- p.s.- from the signature, quality of workmanship, and gilding style, the maker would be the mid/later 19th century maker and not the 18th century one.
  2. To answer your query- How have tastes changed over time- would quite literally require a reasonably sized volume. They have changed considerably over time, are changing now, and shall continue to do so. Just examine some auction catalogs from various periods, and by noting the change in the featured lots you'll get a fairly accurate indication of changing tastes in the market. -S-
  3. Hi BaZZa, Hadn't noticed, thanks for the "heads up". Meant to type WHET, which is the correct usage in this case. -S- p,s,- corrected.

    Shinto Motif?

Steve, these examples come off with more clarity than Omar's, but I do prefer his aesthetically -S-
  5. John, that is an extremely unusual guard, I don't recall seeing one with these exact elements, the heavily lacquered interior is notable. As to date, the deeply cupped form, style of decoration and patina...this one looks at least 18th century. As to liking Namban its hands down for me, the aesthetic doesn't move me........but I do find them a fascinating and important chapter in the story of the Japanese sword. -S-
  6. Great results, the fog has lifted. Gorgeous piece Franco, as Brian notes more pics would be welcome, entire blade, tang.....you've just whet our appetites. -S-

    Shinto Motif?

The type of Oak leaves pictured in John's photo, those used in the making of Kashiwa Mochi ( also eaten on Boys day) are of a completely different form than those depicted on the menuki. -S-

    Shinto Motif?

    Excellent roughage though! -S-

    Shinto Motif?

The first example you picture CHIMAKI only superficially resemble the menuki, the termination of the ends, and the scant amount of "stems" bear little resemblance........ Example 2, none. -S-
  10. Luis, No. -S-
  11. Great is great, regardless of age...denial of the fact is finally fading away...it about time! -S-

    Shinto Motif?

Omar, Daikon are a seasonal motif (Nov./Dec./Jan.). They are also a common offering of the January 7th Daikon festival at Asakusa's Matsuchiyama Shoden Temple (Honryuin). -S-
  13. It's a very nice piece, but compared to the masterworks of this motif it is rather pedestrian......that's why it only brought what it did. It lacks the "life", and tension of the best works, I think of this era as Japans "Helenistic period".....where's the drama? -S-
  14. Indeed it is Evan, indeed it is. BTW, I neglected to mention that it's a beauty....but you already know that! Cheers, -S-
  15. Danke Peter, Your correct, of course, my mistake as well, hope some of the others here will read it......well worth the time! Cheers, -S- p.s.-as it should be now, edited.
  16. Peter, "Kunst des Messerfechtens" is fascinating reading, the history and development of a weapon that features in so many important masterworks of 15th/16th C. art is something I never expected to find here. Being very familiar with these works this weapon was familiar to me, but I was unaware of its history and development......no longer, thank you! -S- p.s.- You never fail to surprise.
  17. Chris, This is interesting stuff, I also came across this site in my travels and enjoyed reading it, as for the mummified remains of the Kappa.......P.T. Barnum would have approved! -S-
  18. Mark, it's almost always something about "a struggle with the kappa". -S-
  19. Ebay, ..........And the laughs keep coming, twenty three years as a reliable source of entertainment ! -S-
  20. Piers, "MINEFIELD", is an appropriate epithet! Talk about complexity, few subjects can challenge Chinese ceramics.......after all, they have been making them for approximately ten thousand years. -S- p.s.-rules are made to be broken.
  21. Great dragons Frank, WELL DONE....and best of luck with the them! -S-

    Nobumasa Tsuba

Johnnyi, It's still a nicely made and interesting piece, just not exactly what it purports to be. -S-
  23. Robert, That's an outstanding example, beautifully made, makes the perfect ensemble. -S-
  24. Yes, a mark found on commercial grade export wares from the end of the reign of Tezong through the reign of Pui, into the republic period and on. The mark's on imperial wares, and high grade "art wares" are hand painted, not printed as this mark is. Cheers, -S-
