  1. The whole 'thing' was insane, some grand delusion concocted by a groupe of covetous old men. Whatever additional resources could be cobbled together would not change the tide. If you wish to pick a fight....don't choose the biggest kid in the schoolyard. What a tragic waste, -S-
  2. Good words Jean, at least he can get this 'cleaning' fetish out of his system.......... without adding another maimed Nihonto to the scrap heap. We can only hope he is wise enough to apply your advice in the future, should he ever acquire the real thing. -S-
  3. 'In for a penny in for a pound'? -S-
  4. REY0010, Your sword does look highly suspect for Japanese workmanship. -S-
  5. Thanks for your efforts Peter, sometimes computer/net things mysteriously don't work out......always a Gremlin, when it's a Gnome you need! -S-
  6. Peter, Checked the previous 10 links before these last two, they all work.....but these are still not functioning....session TIMED OUT??? -S-
  7. Peter, Don't know if it's just me but link is not working!?! -S-
  8. Pietro, both terms are, no doubt, politically incorrect...as are just about all things nowadays. As for the students 'graduation piece', an interesting thought, I'd like to hear Ford Hallam's take on this.....if this was a common practice he will certainly be able to enlighten us. -S-
  9. Not a bad thought......simply bore them to death! -S-
  10. As Christian said it could have been made as a decorative inclusion for furniture, smaller lacquer articles, etc....this was popular in the Meiji period. Or it could have been altered later, I have, on ocassion, seen things like this mounted on swords with a couple of additional loose plates......why I have no idea. -S-
  11. Very interesting Piers, I take it that these woodblock printed prayers were 'purchased' fron a Shrine? -S-
  12. Chris, Keep at it and you'll arrive at your destination. We all applaud your willingness to take on this 'epic' journey to bring us better photographic skills. Good lighting IS foremost but, please, stick to purchasing them on line.....don't be tempted to 'borrow' them from Zeus. Cheers, -S-
  13. Looking good Chris, keep the pictures coming as things develop. -S- p.s.-Sorry pun was impossible to resist.
  14. Yes George, and the gold is STILL outside the lines, as you know the occurence is common place...much more visible 'in hand'. One of the best places to observe this is in bubbles of ocean spray, and drops of dew. -S-
  15. Thanks for the picture Glen, It's a very nice quality later Edo/early Meiji piece, curious this maker isn't better recorded. The katakiribori and hira zogan are well done, and the quality of the ivory used for the bowl looks good. There are many makers of which little is known, jury is still out on this one, with luck some information may still come forward. Best, -S-
  16. Steve, I have lots of references and this is all I can find, differing kanji and one item with no signature recorded. This is from Netsuke by Neil K. Davey. Also, searched online, nothing. Glen, could you post some pictures of the piece? -S-
  17. Many legitimate pieces exhibit plenty of it, what makes this set so obviously 'wrong' is the strange style of the execution.... this is never seen in traditional Japanese work. -S-
  18. TETSUGENDO

    Stunning

Indeed, few would argue that. -S-
  19. Hope your enjoying your hiatus Peter....meanwhile, what will we read! -S-
  20. Actually, some 'encroachment' of gold decoration onto surrounding areas is not uncommon, it is present on works by some of the greatest masters. One must assess the design quality and workmanship as a whole to make a judgement. The piece illustrated is an NBTHK papered Hozon example by Omori Terumitsu from a website of unquestionable reputation. -S-
  21. +1, as Ford says. Unfortunately, your new acquisition is absolutely fake. -S-
