me do completely agree with Ford´s writing here. Did somehow not dare to give mine thought yesterday evening, when i saw this Tsuba posted(had ben first to comment it- equally did/do not really want to discourage James here) It but is NOT Akasaka-and it´s NOT an good one. It strongly reminds me to cast Sentoku(or even lesser quality amalgam) which got however patinated. Dito i do not agree in anything obviously seen to ben called "cisel marks" Note Mimi-there´s somehow characteristic reminding me to cast-bubbles here(which can be found on low quality cast) It´s an cast reproduction-stylism taken from late Tosa Myochin school Aka copies... An real Fake in mine eyes. Sorry Christian

Chris, i see and do agree fully!(what else?)... Me myself,at least, took decision so to keep it going on as i wrote above. And Still i do have mine very personal pleasure with-will certainly keep on going also...LOL! Very hearthly! Christian

Dear Chris i do honour your´s feeling and taking time to write this up a very lot! Well aware in fact due fact i do know both sides of that spoken medal. Reality will but not ben predictable. Best way-me personally think-is to stay cool and patient/someohow same attitude you do act as an active collector equally. I but agree with you!-It´s not that easy undertaking....and you are right But?(Question) Why then we do collect? Is it for ourselfes?-or rather for what?...Pleasure!-that´s all in fact i think... You may call it devotion sometimes(maybe)?(for those crasy like myself i do confess)-Principle is but same...it will not change, nor care. Why worry? Christian

generally speaking i think an good collection is known. such,in case it´s sold either individually per object,or per bunch-the good pieces will ben picked out already before it´s commonly known or published this collection is sold.(despite some rare events where specific politics or interests are involved) That´s equally the reason why collectors should forcefully try to get in personal touch with each other, seeing the each others collection, knowing the other collector personally and talk with each other! Papers are essential-do but only make sense for the prime to very prime level. Letting issue things of good to very good level, will equally not improove/increase the individual object.(neither in value-nor in reputation) (an knowledgeable collector either ways "sees") Those, thinking you would learn something from papers-i do recomment to buy books instead, collect knowledge by seeing collections in live and finally to be patient in their´s way in how to collect. what is definition of waritsuki vs sogetugi, sogekin?
christianmalterre replied to kaigunair's topic in Tosogu
Hi Junichi, Wari-tsugi: Vertically spliced metal surface finish using two different kind of metal Soge-tsugi: Two kind of metals(mostly of gold and Shakudo combination)forming the surface of the back of Kozuka or the main body of Kogai in diagonally spliced manner-also called SOGE-KIN Fukume(i)-kin: Thin gold sheet inset at the edges, covering the entire reverse-a characteristic of Kozuka and Kogai(Terms)... Hope i could be of some help to you.... Cheers! Christian -
The Tsuba from auction was an Futagoyama Norisuke Shodai. The Tsuba attached on this Koshirae is equally Norisuke school-i even tend to say it´s an Shodai equally(referencing me just from pictures-for definite attribution i had to see this Tsuba in live, which jet,was not possible for me) I but did inform Jean already some days before the auction took place regarding this spoken auctionhouse Lot.... Yes-Nice Tsuba! Christian

rather common practice-...least as long your´s "reputation" is not honoured financially(i tend to say here Brian) and such-(so to ben "honoured" financially(in final)-does take it´s time)... It´s an well known procedure in fact....(arts and crafts)... Out of 10 there´s only one good one...rest is sold "as is"... #10 is kept-rest sold "as is"-and finally, when rest got sold you do enter market with #10... That´s all. Simple,Stupid,Common practice...(way of market) (and i do know in fact-speaking as an Stonemason here,19 years practice in back) LOL! Time to wonder(?)-rather not...time for critical analysis?-rather Yep Christian -
Hoaffablo :D missed that threat here-sorry for delay of mine post! Is this an Oal or rather an toad depicted here? LOL! Funny piece! (don´t be so harsh here Gentlemen ) Alex,do keep it!-It´s pretty very cool and funny in fact!(Me do Love it!!!!) (once you do have an good collection to show and discuss to an collectors friend during nice evening meeting-the last one you lay on table must be THIS one...LOL!) No joke!-pretty funny Tsuba for everybody(who did not see it yet) i think.... Laugh! It´s Cool! :D Christian

Fire retardant underwear on? LOL! Adrian-not with me here (personally big fan of Sd.Kfz.V-1943)-i´ll ask .88L/56 or rather .75L/70??? (I joke!) Do see what you mean and have to confess it´s somehow known...(i just wonder it´s taking place these days and not 5 Years ago) Once there was an pretty really nice(!) sword offered,sold,resold,papered-refused,again papered....ect. Don´t know where it is actually-i but guess it´s still browsing around...well kept-smiling at us... I but hope Rich T. or Guido S. is reading this-as i am shure one of them could provide you with excellent pictures here...(do not remind whom of both gentlemen posted this sword once in past-there were but pictures posted...(other forum) I recall this one Dito was an Chinese made(by words)....Real Fake!...really Good one!-an "crack" of sword...an excellent!!! Fake... Christian -
Very nice Jean!!!! (just please do honour me pleasure in changing this Sageo here :? ) (actually looks like "beach beauty" or "little smart girl"- :D -LOL!) Cheers Christian

maybe there´s just an reduction in collection taking place here? I personally do not see an problem here at all... not really the blades enthousiast or fan of blades- i but can tell you it would look Dito if some of us Tosogo Guys would start decision so to reduce,or clearing, his Tsuba or Kodogu collection in once... ? All sorts of wrong. Yari?

Presuambly it seems, plus that this crab of an seller equally filed(by Flex???) an Hisaki area(?) onto?(bricksteel)-letting blank something we would call Hiraji in other circumstances? he´d better done in offering that as an toothpick or letteropener...(No?) Christian -
Nichiren sect mandala
christianmalterre replied to John A Stuart's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
Dear mine friends that´s pretty much O.K. for me. Fine. As i wrote, just an simple question from mine very personal standpoint i have. Please do accept and tolerate mine questioning-grounding on personal couriosity-that´s all in fact. Thank you honestly! Christian -
Nichiren sect mandala
christianmalterre replied to John A Stuart's topic in General Nihonto Related Discussion
just please allow me this question: what is that appealing/fascinating for an westener heading interest into this sect? I do agree the various art forms resulting and available on the antiques market do find an more and more increasing public of devotee- do but wonder what in regard of an westener is that fascinating on those sect(s)... Is it the history behind-or rather the pantheon of hundreds of goods, texts and rituals? Mineself rather am interested into the workmanship, materials, preservation of such religious relicts... I do have an scroll depicting an Shoki(Matabei school)(see somewhere in the past sales section posts...i still do have it as i decided not to part finally) just have read an very fascinating book:Marathon Monks of Mount Hiei... It´s indeed fascinating what cruel passion and devotion is done here-i but do me hard in understanding why especially westeners get such addictet to these beliefs... ??? I but agree of course-your´s painting is exotic and interesting indeed... Christian -
Laugh! Funny thing here for barbecue evening... :D David-that´s Imari school blue white,an typical early Meiji Japanese garden seat... The Imari-when starting their´s blue-white,were influenced by the Kano-school of painting... (the crossed blades-an "retroperspective"(loan),the japenese took after they saw how Dresden Porcellain got priced in Europe during 19th..) Many-if not 80%+ were massproduced for export...reason why Imari still is not valuable despite some very rare objects... This seat here definitely but is not that old-it´s Meiji... Personally still can not see Namban in your´s Tsuba here...LOL! Christian
-
Hmmmh???? more Katchushi than Namban in mine eyes... But?-LOL! John-who knows???...it´s kind of "fama nihil est celerius" like always with such vague attributions given,in mine eyes... Such-let´s study,study,study.... Christian
-
-
i fully do agree with your´s observations here David... the whole attribution does seem me typical conservative in many aspects (does equally but not puzzle me,it´s typical Japanese behaviour,as you do know yoursself)...had this feeling already before, when seeing it here on previous post you set... In fact-i can not really see Namban here-to say it honest... What shall be Namban here? Katchushi yes-and an excellent forged ita ditto-an intriguing refined stylism and excellent composition(if in fact the Hitsu Ana,Diamond/Jewel,Butterfly(?) had this form already on the Katchushi plate) actually think the ground-plate is to ben placed even earlier-eventually an Katchushi(in high esteem)which latter got overworked in taste of new owner? Possible...Early Edo taste had crowded influences from multiple art taste... Earlier than Edo-me personally doupt,do but not hold hands in fire equally.... Either way-Intriguing-Very Nice! Very rarely have seen Tsuba which immediately did attract mine interest that way... As i said already in mine former post-Excellent choice!(very much better than your´s other Tsuba you did post here in comparence-even also this one is very interesting equally of course!) Christian
-
Very nice David! Excellent choice-it´s in many aspects very interesting indeed! question: is this an Shakudo insert here? Does "this" go entirely "through" or is it surfacely fixed by zogan manner? (see picture) Christian
-
i but see why you point on cast here Mariusz Laugh! Maybe Jean could point out Mimi and Seppa-Dai area(Hitsuana) some more close in further pictures??? Christian
-
personally don´t think it´s an cast one actually... could be "worn out" equally... No reason to cast it those days-casting is delicate! Latter Edo Tsubashi-especially Kyushu had plenty of possibility to purchase highest quality iron ore...why then(considdering those times) an cast(production)? It´s non anreligious Tsuba,depiction-ect-(eventual lineage to some older Tsubaschools here in backmind)-rather standard...so no reason to cast equally here... Ditto timesheet does not congrue with an cast.... And-it´s certainly not from Modern times equally... So why? Maybe some better pictures first? Here on these-you just can guess-or just(at least-LOL!) lament about.... Christian
-
Jean i think we do have here(equally in your´s other threat above-same sortout collection)some very interesting stuff indeed. The material reminds strong sorting out from an well educated taste of ancient-art vogue and stylism? You may get certainly some reflection here-at least hopefully(?!) Not really mine stylism-such i do link me out-will but follow.... An first hint may be to surch out the bookshelf for those old publications by Joly,Behrens,Sandak,Moesle Oeder...(sounds their´s stylism) Maybe equally Behrens(i actually but doupt?)and Halberstadt?(possible) Marc B. certainly could help you here... Ditto browse the "Association Franco-Japonaise" issues....M.Burawoy did publish some very interesting essaye regarding Mitsuhiro(Hizen)... don´t have the literature by hand actually... Cheers! Christian
